It was actually one of the prototypes for the flattop. It is a ridiculous piece of redwood!! Amazing wide and even flame. It is routed for humbuckers with a single coil in the middle. I have had it about 90% complete for months. I even have a neck made for it. Maple neck with Indian RW board.

Rough carving the top before I install the binding...

And here I am installing the binding. I actually superglued my thumb to Pai's guitar!! I am using retarder to dissolved the superglue!

Schroeder
05-31-2008, 05:09 PM
It was actually pretty funny, I was using superlue accelerator and wanted to make sure that the binding was just right at that tight bend so i just held it there (but a little too long!). Mitchell and Elizabeth were laughing at me because i literally had the guitar hanging off of my hand. Fortunately, I didn't panic! I waited patiently for the glue to become unstuck and was rescued without losing too much of my thumb! I will make sure the fingerprint is gone before finish!!

I only did it becasue I liked yours so much. If you disect it, you might still be the leader. Ryan says the Myrtle Chopper is his and Custom #23 is definately his. I think he is going to claim the SC as well. I own (parts and pieces as of right now) #26, and the zero fret. The future Bass will be my daughter Melanie's. I could go for 1/2 of the SC and that leaves you the clear leader at three. :D

Yeah the lighting is treating that guitar nicely. Seems to cover the scratches and the huge change in finish from where my pick glides over to where nothing ever touches it. It was taken after a weekend of playing with Roz Brown at the Goddard Center in Ardmore OK.

Redwood always looks beautiful though !

Here is a quick shot of Pai's chopper. The back is a light tobacco. The back looked a bit washed out with the burst so the shade really pulled the guitar together. This angle shows how the top and back colors relate.

This is a very lightweight body with the tone chamber and redwood top so I expect this to be a very lud and resonant guitar. Can't wait to hear it! The neck is carved and I will be posting pics soon as I complete the shaping of the heel and headstock transition.

Pai's body about ready for wetsand and buff. Such a dramatic top on this one! And the body is very lightweight with the redwood top and chambered body. Even with the thicker mahogany back, I expect it will be a very nice weight when completed.

That is typical of Redwood. The figuring does not go perpendicular to the grain like Maple does. It has a distinctive angle to it. When you look closely at the top you will see the grain going parallel with the neck. It is seriously great looking wood that has a killer tone to it. Think of it as Cedar on steroids.

Well we were away for Memorial Day Weekend but between Thursday's arrival and return I've gotten some good time with the guitar.
Fit and finish pretty much perfect, I saw a few uneven bits in the neck pocket.
The neck looked a tat dry so I oiled it. The feel of it is great!!! And the guitar is a breeze to play.
I ehm tightened the string locks too much at one point and broke two strings! OOPS. Good thing I have a bunch of those lying around.
Guitar just looks great. It feels hefty but not heavy, I've been spoiled by many many super lightweight chambered guitars, this is pretty much the heaviest guitar I've owned for quite a while! But it isn't heavy, hefty captures it well.
Acoustically it rings wonderfully and sustains great, right there a big nice plus!
I also plugged it in, into my Chandler C38 (very Fender 6L6s) and my Crate Palomino V32 (very Vox/Marshall EL84s)
After a little tweaking with the pick up heights and some twiddling on the amps, I am getting some great tone! Excellent ringing cleans and tons of grind across a wide spectrum. The various settings also balance out quite well as you go from Full to Split and they mix well also.
I like the sound in all settings except ... the Hum Bridge setting. The sound is very Strat like, 'quacky' you might say. Very unexpected to me. I personally had hoped for a bit more of an LP ish piercing screaming brightish style 'lead' sound.
I don't know what affects this so I am not sure if this can be changed around or not. Plenty of people out there that probably would love to have this strat sound but it is not my thing. Anyways for now I'm just staying away from that setting and loving the others.
Thanks Jason, the guitar is great, the fit and feel excellent and the sound is awesome (and yes it is a good strat sound I just don't want a strat sound LOL) Let me know if anything can be tweaked in that respect.

Hi Pai!
Thanks so much for your review of your guitar. I didn't notice a quack in the pickup and that is definitely not a normal thing for Wagners!!! Does the pickup slpit when you pull the volume knob? I am wondering if something is shorting and you have it in single coil mode?
