Hey Bill,
Here is your top glued, and a couple of shots of your body cutout!! I tried to get it in a few different kinds of light so you can see the figure in the top. Really gorgeous piece of maple! Now we'll see if I can carve left handed!!! :D

Just after glueup:

Here is the latest. The rabbit is done around the perimeter of the guitar (down to the faux binding line and the face angle is cut into the body (from the neck to the bridge area). Also got the neck and pickups cavities routed. Ready for carve!

Here is the VERY rough carve!! Lots of smoothing to do! i have to admit it really takes a lot of concentration to carve a lefty!! But after a while I started getting the hang of it.

Bill,
Here are some pics of the headstock purfling. Quite an involved process! The headstock veneer has to be cut first to final shape. Then the prufling channel is cut with a Dremel and a special jig. The jig follows the shape of the headstock. And then the purfling has to be carefully placed in the channel with miter joints at each corner. I did all of the shaping and routing and handed it off to Elizabeth to fit the purfling. Looking really good so far!!

Hi all,

Well I havent posted since getting my guitar in hand- I have been working through a pickup swap and wanted to hold off on any "review" until I had things all perfect.

So here goes.

Comfort:

- The neck profile is PERFECT. This is the most comfortable neck shape I have ever played. And Im not blowing smoke here. Comparing to PRS neck contours- the wide-fat profile was a tad too big, wide-thin is a tad too thin... but neither were uncomfortable per se. I gave this feedback to Jason and he came up with something in between... seriously 100% perfect.
- The weight is just right. I gave Jason a target to shoot for if possible, and he was able to hit it without compromising tone.
- Stainless steel frets- I love em. When I first started playing it after receiving it, bends and vibrato just felt SO fluid- night and day difference. More than I would have thought. That adds so much to giving the guitar a unique feel- nickel frets seem like a bit more "work" now that Ive gotten used to these. SS frets just feel cooler and help me make that link with the guitar that we all strive for.

Looks:

- Well, take a look at the pics. Jason nailed exactly what I had in my head for color, top figure, braz figure.
- Great assembly and craftsmanship, Ive looked this thing over in detail so many times, and he just did a great job.

Sound :

- This took a bit to dial in. I asked Jason for a Duncan Alnico II neck, and Custom Custom bridge. I had never actually played these, but I liked the sound clips I heard, and descriptions on the web. Well, these were not for me. Through my rig, they had way to much high end chime, and didnt sound great. I play through a Mesa Boogie Stiletto ACE, which is a very bright amp, and the combination of these PUPs through that amp created a slightly harsh high end. Clean sounds were dead on, split tones sounded great, but I could not dial in what I wanted for lead or distorted rhythm tones. Jason stood by his word to help make things 100% perfect, and we found a set that worked perfectly. Once I swapped in a JB bridge and Duncan Jazz neck, the guitar really came to life. I have absolutely no complaints here.

The build process:

- Very exciting- Jason was always very accessible via phone and email, and helped me with lots of questions and recommendations, such as electronics configuration (suggesting the "mega-switch" was his idea, and boy am I glad he recommended it!).
- The build time was a bit longer than I expected, and it was very hard when you see photos of other guitars moving along but no updates on yours. Part of the process for sure- everyone wants thier guitar moving before the others :) I fed back to Jason that setting folks' expectations on build time, and rough ideas for dates for completion of certain phases would help keep people's "frustrations" in check. Even if they are not high confidence dates, setting a rough timeline helps.

All in all, a 10 out of 10 for the final product, Jason's work ethic, and the experience working with him and Elizabeth. I would definitely (and likely will) choose him again for my next custom build.

Thanks Jason & Elizabeth! Well worth the wait and I couldnt be happier.

Bill

Don't even ask how many times I changed pups in some of my guitars?

It's amazing what a pup change can do to the tone of a guitar. From bright and thin to thick and warm with just a pup change. I truly believe you have to match the pups to each individual guitar, and sometimes that can take a few tries.

Funny Bill, the Custom Custom and Alnico Pro II were the pups that transfomed a very bright and thin sounding Les Paul of mine to a very thick and warm sounding one.

It only took me about 4 or 5 changes until I came upon that combo and I loved them in that particular guitar.

Just goes to show each guitar's voice is different and personal tastes are too.

I'm glad you found your guitars voice!
