Oh man what a cool feeling it was to come on here and see this thread totally unexpected! Guess I'll lay down the specs:

- Singlecut Black Limba Body with One Piece Maple top
- Gloss nitro finish like an LP Brockburst <changed to Lemonburst in July 08>, I'm calling it Schrockburst
- Natural body binding
- IRW neck with Maple binding, Tour Guitar width, and a big Chunky carve
- Brazilian Board with Trapezoid inlays ala Suckerpunch. "S" logo in 12 fret Trap.
- 25" Scale 22 fret
- Adjustable wraparound tailpiece
- Push Pull volume and tone pots for multi switching choices ala Jimmy Page

J, What do you think about a yellow tiger finish on this maybe? If it's already bursted fine but this yellow really has me thinking. I don't want to slow down your process or hold anybody else up but if a tiger finish is easier than a burst it really might look killer with this yellow! Just a thought.

http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/RobF/robf_yellow.jpg

Kind of like this Modern Eagle that was polished.

Hey Rob,

J

Not faded, definitely want to stick with gloss as planned. I was just thinking instead of wiping it with a burst next maybe do a tiger. Kind of like the tour guitar ya know. That yellow pops so good that it is begging for it :) I did an edit threw some pics up above.

Again, if it messes up your timetable I wouldn't want to cause other guys delays.

That tiger finish looks nice .. a burst might look cool.
I kinda like the way it is.
(also technically speaking I think for Tiger you need to put down the dark stain first sand it then go over it with the yellow so that would be an extra ordinary amount of work because it would mean remove the current finish and redo it)

Ya, Pai is 100% on this one. Because of how Tiger finishes are done, it would mean sanding down to bare wood. I am TOTALLY willing to do it if that is what you want Rob. There is only a seal coat or two on the top so no big deal.

Here is the tiger process on John Metzger's doublecut.

Yah should totally go with what you want that is why this is a custom order right? :)

BTW Jason while we're on this subject I wonder have you done a lot of experiments with these Tiger finishes, like use a brown or black, or purple or blue as your first dark coat etc?

Schroeder

BTW Jason while we're on this subject I wonder have you done a lot of experiments with these Tiger finishes, like use a brown or black, or purple or blue as your first dark coat etc?

I have done almost every color you can think of in multi-stage staining process. Blue, purple, yellow, orange, brown, green, even pink! They all start with darker colors (which stay in the darker figure) and get lighter to show off the highlight.

The first guitar I "double-stained" was a complete accident. It was in the early 90s and I had stained a guitar a deep maroon/red. I didn't like how it turned out so I sanded it back but realized that the red did not come completely out. It was left in the lighter figure. I went over it with green and it was really cool. You could see the red through the green if you held it in the sunlight. Inside it just looked green. The guitar color with the red/green looked like a watermelon Jelly-Belly! I started doing more and more double staining and did the first Tiger Eye with the Santana copy I built in the late 90s.

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1620/995811/3012991/44430798.jpg

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1620/995811/3012991/34058024.jpg
Now almost every stain I do is at least a double stain. It is a bit more work than simply wiping on a stain and clear coating but it really brings out the figure and adds to the complexity of color. The skill is really in the sanding as much as the staining.

That looks killer Rob and Jason.

And let me say how cool it was of Jason to offer to strip off the yellow and go back and do a tiger stain if Rob wanted that. That is just way too cool.

Regardless of what Jason says, it would have been a big step backwards and a lot of work to go back re-do that for you. The fact that he made it sound like no big deal says a ton about his customer service and his desire to please his customers.

Believe me Rob, as a guy in the paint field, it was a mighty big offer.

I think you made the right decision though, it looks great and only is going to look better when he is goes through all the polishing steps.

Congrats again and great burst Jason!

r9player

I agree top notch service there from Jason .. especially with the sand down you go into those hazy territories of can it all be cleanly sanded off and will it affect the flame pattern or will any residual finish prevent a good base stain to get a nice tiger finish etc.
then again what do I know ... I don't build guitars nor do finishes ... LOL

Right off the bat from feel I love it. The guitar is lighter than I expected and J nailed the neck carve. Top and back are stunning to me. I love the fact that J posted the pic when the guitar was yellow because that changed my opinion of what the burst color should be, definitely a good move and I am thankful for that picture!

Acoustically the guitar rings beautifully. Loud, resonant, vibrates in the neck, you really become one with it. The fretboard is silky smooth too.

The inlays are unbelievable, no filler gaps, beautiful job E!!!!
