Cosmetically that Driskill is the guitar all others should guaged against. And from what Doc says, tone also. Incredible looking gutiar.

BTW, I would like to thank my Quilt Expert for his advice in making my selection

Pleasure is all mine Stu! Trust me, it makes you much more careful when you cut a piece of wood like this!! I can only imagine what it is like putting it in a machine to have the machine cut it!! Ron Thorn says that his heart rate still goes up a bit every time he turns on the CNC! It's pretty easy to screw up a few hundred bucks of lumber in a hurry if you aren't careful.

This top is absolutely stunning in person. Here is a pic of Stu's wood waiting to be thickness planed. Note the ridiculous quilt. So huge and billowy. It is sitting on top of the Tour Guitar. Tour Guitar's neck is to the right. Mitchell is planing Will's top in background.

Stu,
Here are the progress pics for you. The limba is stunning in person. Everything came together nicely in the last couple of days! Here is the top laying on the back prior to glue-up.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com:80/VOL208/995811/7918975/108317045.jpg

And the top clamped and being glued to top early this morning. It was clamped for about 10 hours and I just finished cuting out the body and smoothing the sides. Should be carving the top very soon...

WOW. Looks amazing Jason, the front and the back.

As far as color, I was originally thinking of something pretty radical. But after seeing how "Pal Ale" is coming out, man I'm digging that! Pale Ale with a dark brazialin neck and ebony board may be the winning color combo.

I will keep it simple again!! Here is Stu's guitar after a couple hours of carving, chiseling, grinding, and sanding. Still LOTS of work to do but really starting to take shape. The most significant change from here will be shaping the horns. This really gives the guitar character. This is sanded only to 80 grit (very rough) and it is still showing tons of figure. Looks like a snake skin! This is going to be a beautiful body. One of the best things about using great wood is when it comes to life as you sand it and refine the carve.

Stu's neck is really coming together nicely! Take a look at how beautiful the neck is. It reminds me of a black horse in the sun where it brings out the brown highlights. Really nice piece of BRW. I radiused the ebpny board and rough shaped the headstock. Stu's is second from teh left. I just thought this was a great view of the headstock color. Will's guitar is to the left, then Stu's, then Shad's 7 string baritone, then Michael's doublecut FATback.

Stu, I hope you are sitting down...

I did some refining to Stu's carve today. I am blown away by this piece of quilt. It makes me feel all funny inside!! ;) Seriously I sanded it to 220 and it feels like SILK. Gorgeous hunk of maple. And the flamed black limba back ain't too shabby either!!! :D I also got the back rounded over and the belly carve cut. I just need to fit the neck first so that I can make sure everything lines up (pickups, trem cavity, etc.) Here she is... MAMA!!!!!

You know, evety time I see a sweet quilt like that..or mine too, for that matter, I get the inclination to abandon my color & go nude...I mean natural! I didn't mean to scare you people! As much as I love colors, & like the one I'm going with, they DO look so beautiful in their natural state! You GOTTA be goin' nuts Stu! Amazing!....You deserve it!

Humm... I'm I predictable??? I was actually going to post last night, but my computer was acting up. Tony, I am not sure why you assume I have something to say...

I think it might have something to do with this:
speaking of nude, I think Jason needs to follow in the footsteps of Joe Driskill...

But, to be honest with you, I have no idea what you are referring to. Is there a story behind that?

ANYWAY----

STU- wanted to tell you about your guitar. Just so you know, I had a crazy few days at work. I spent about 10 hours at work on Friday and 13 hours at work on both Saturday and Sunday. I was a little busy this past weekend. I am telling you that because normally I am around, so I see what is going on with your guitars on a daily basis. Bscause I was gone, I didn't follow the process this weekend. So I got to see progress all at once.
I came home last night and Jason was emailing clients, so I took a few minutes to look at the forum, and generally catch myself up. When I saw the pics on your thread, I was blown away. What an incredible guitar!!!!  I sat there staring at the photos on my computer and I kept thinking, "i bet this looks unbelieveable in person."
Seriously, I had a LONG day. My mind was not functioning. After looking at the photos for 5 minutes, I finally realized that I could get off my butt and go look at the actual guitar sitting 10 feet away. :?
So I got off my bum and picked up your guitar. It is 10x better in person. It feels amazing, and the quilt is stunning. I don't even have words for it. It has so much depth and figure ... it is beautiful. I think the only way to fully omprehend what I am talking about would be to hold it in your hands.
So, I think I am telling you that you should come to California to see it in person. That is the only way you will understand.  :D

I will explain Driskill Guitar Stands to E-beth. Just really nice bare wood ;) stands RIGHT guys?!!! :D

To me the quilt looks like a reptile. Very pretty. I am really happy with the carve too. Nice and deep with smooth but distinct lines. It is funny to watch people pick up a bare wood bod that has been carved and sanded. People just run their hands over it!! It is nearly universal. It's like a 4 pound worry stone!!!

I was in San Fran last yr, didn't see no decent guitar shops. I didn't have much time to putz around but I went to one place in haight ashbury and the GC downtown. The rest of the time I was in San Fran and then skiing in tahoe. Problem with going to San Fran, too much do to and guitars is on the bottom of my list when I'm there, yes I know, bite my tongue, but it is.

Once in mid december, but I'll be only a couple of days and busy at Northwestern, the next time next March for a wk, and I'll have time then to have some fun.

Not to derail this thread anymore

So Stu whats with this Archtop you are planning behind my back??

My girlfriend Kim(Snorkey on BaM) WORKS at Northwestern! Maybe we can hook up in March. I SHOULD have my Schroeder by then, if everything goes according to estimates, but we all know how that can be. I'd love to meet ya & talk gear!!!

For those that are interested though, yes Jason is working on an artchop idea for me.

Hey guys!! Here are a few pics of Stu's neck nearly completed.

Here is the headstock inlay cavity being cut. Notice I had not done the final shaping of the end of the headstock in this pic.

Thanks guys. "X" markes the spot baby! The letter "X" has some personal significance to me so I thought of having one made from the "Shcroeder Wings" that are used on Jasons "S" logo. Works real well. As far as the other fret markers, I wanted them real small and subtle. I would have gone with no fretmarkers at all except for the X at the 12th, but I have never played a guitar with no fretmarkers and was fearfull I would be a bit lost. So the small dots work great.

I started carving Stu's neck today. This is basically a rough in stage. I have taken the dimensions from a neck that he really likes....

http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Stu/measure%20PRS.jpg

Transfered the thickness measurements (width was already accounted for) to his neck...

http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Stu/mark%20neck.jpg

Here I show the thickness guideline and I have masked the fretboard so it does not get scratched. I placed the neck on top of the radius block to support it while I am thickness planing it on the drill press with the Safe-T-Planer...
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Stu/neck%20carve%201.jpg
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Stu/neck%20carve%202.jpg

Here is the neck clamped into a new neck holding jig that I made. Note that it conforms to the angle of the headstock and is padded with carpeting. It is high enough that it does not interfere with the rasp as I am roughing in the the neck shape. The yellow line on the back of the neck is along the centerline. I will avoid cutting any material off of the centerline so I maintain the proper thickness down the neck.

http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Stu/neck%20carve%203.jpg

Roughing in the neck shape with a coarse rasp (also called a bastard file)...

http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Stu/neck%20carve%204.jpg
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Stu/neck%20carve%205.jpg

The neck is now rough carved. I can start refining the transitions to the headstock and heel and attempt to emulate the carve of the other neck. More to come...

shad: My preferences with figured tops tend to be amber tones. I really like the Tour guitar Pale Ale, Tiger Eye, and PRS Vintage Natural. I'll probably leave it up to Jason what he thinks will look best with my maple. But it will be something like the above mentioned.

Stu - I really owe you a thank you for your patience. I have had Stu's PRS for way too long. He sent it to me as an example for his neck carve right before all of the house stuff started!
