Nice wood choice Will. I am probably going to order a singlecut from him a lot like your 3 single coil PS PRS but with EMGs and some other unique features...your singlecut is a beauty. I am going to start slimming my collection down and morphing all the features I like into a few guitars. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.

Will, it isn't that difficult, you just need to bandsaw first then plane it using a Safe-T-Planer on the drill press, then belt sand it smooth. Glue it to the headstock and you are good to go. I think it would look pretty sweet. Especially if it was on the front and back of the headstock!

imported_DrPCR

well, there you go! I want the options!

imported_Schroeder
08-15-2005, 04:17 AM
Here is my challenge of the week!!! And it was a huge success. Thanks Will. And thanks for being patient. I have been contemplating this for the past couple of weeks. Sort of like a surgeon going through the knee surgery over and over in his head before he actually operates!! ;)

I had to figure out the best way to carve an F-hole in a semi-hollow for Will's Prototype Traditional Single Cutaway. So what IU decided on was to do a rough cutout of the body shape leaving about an inch all around teh perimeter so I have a nice big gluing surface. But I cut the body shape to its final dimensions near the F-hole and where the body will be semi-hollow.

Here is the layout with my plans drawn on the guitar. Notice the skirt around the perimeter in all but the area near the F-hole.
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480083.jpg

And here it is rough cut on the bandsaw and sanded to final dimensions near the F-hole.
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480076.jpg

Things are getting tricky here. I then carved only the portion near the F-hole to final dimensions. This was important because it will be my guide for cutting the UNDERSIDE of the top in the next steps.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480072.jpg

imported_Schroeder
08-15-2005, 04:25 AM
And here is the layout for the underside. Sort of ugly at this point! You can the outline of the recess where the F-hole will be. This will also coincide with the sound chamber. Noitce I drew the bridge location and the location of the bridge pickup for reference. The center of the F-hole is traditionally located at the bridge location.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480064.jpg

I needed a guide so that I could determine where to stop carving the underside of the top. So I drilled a screw through an old template and clamped it to my drill press table. The tip of the screw lined up exactly with a 1/8" dril bit. I then set the depth stop on my drill press so that I would drill into the maple but it would stop short of the screw by about 3/16".

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480058.jpg

I put a lot of masking tape on the body and sanded the tip off of the screw to prevent damage to the top. I then started drilling holes into the back of the guitar within the lines I had drawn for the cavity.
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480055.jpg

imported_Schroeder
08-15-2005, 04:29 AM
I continued to put holes in the underside of the top, concentrating most on the area where the F-hole will be.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480052.jpg

Time to take the grinder to the back!! Now all I have to do is grind down to the bottom of the holes. Pretty ugly at this point.
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480049.jpg

Almost there.
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480046.jpg

Cleaned up with the orbital sander...
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/108480040.jpg

And here it is complete and ready to cut the F-hole, then glue.

imported_Schroeder
08-15-2005, 06:07 AM
Hey Tommy,
There are really two reasons to do what i described above. One affects sound, the other affects the look of the completed guitar. With a semi-hollow and tone chambered guitar with an F-hole, it will resonant differently and be notably louder when played acoustically. On an electric it is often considered less critical to tone than other factors but it will change the feel of the guitar for sure. The top is thinned form the backside so that the area of the top that is near the F-hole will vibrate more readily (less stiff than a top that is not hollowed from the underside). Also, it is so that the F-hole will reveal a uniform thickness around its perimeter.
J

PS - thanks Bryan!

ok, typing this from vacation land, man that looks awesome. I got an email from Jason to check out the thread, man that looks just amazing.

I'm also lost on alot of the tech issues, but thats why Jason is building it, not ME!

imported_Schroeder
08-16-2005, 04:51 AM
OK, no tech discussion tonight!! :) Just pics. I spent a couple hours working on the soundhole tonight. Will was trusting enough to let me design my own soundhole for his guitar. I really appreciate that vote of confidence!! I have been thinking of something original for the last couple of weeks. This design is pretty close to one I designed a few years back when I was really studing Jimmy D'Aquisto's work. It is inspired by the soundholes on a couple of my favorite D'Aquisto designs, with (hopefully) my own flavor:

the Solo:
http://www.seriousacoustics.com/gifs/daq-solo1.jpg

And the Excel:
http://www.mandoweb.com/83-4542.jpg

Here is what I came up with:

Here is how I got it to that point.

The main cutouts:

Patented Schroeder low-tech solution!!

One more suggestion...

BIND THOSE HOLES!!! lol

Binding an F-hole is one of the coolest touches one can put on an instrument. It also really makes the hole stand visually out on the guitar.

Again...great job Jason. Spectacular work, and a very unique look. I dig it.

imported_Schroeder
08-16-2005, 08:58 PM
Cool, I am glad the S-holes are being received well! Hope Will is OK with them too! :) As for binding, I would agree, as long as the rest of the body was bound. But this one will have faux binding so binding the soundhole would not look quite right. It is another one of those beauty in the eye of the beholder things... But I can make more!! :D

View of limba through S-hole (note pencil marks on edge of S-hole where I will touch up by sanding):
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/109029543.jpg

The top is ready to glue to the limba. Should be done tomorrow. I need to make a clamping caul that I will use to clamp the body that was not carved. I will use about 7-8 spring clamps in the area of the cavity.

Here is the latest. I have finished the body cavity and soundhole, glued the quilted maple back to the body, and now the top is clamped to the body. After the glue dries I will be ready to finish cutting the outline and carve the top.

Here is the back glued to the body with a view of what will be seen through the soundhole...

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/109259075.jpg

A tradition in archtop guitar making is to sign the underside of the top before gluing. Notice that I have applied Tung oil to seal the wood that will be exposed in the cavity upon completion.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/109259073.jpg

Here is the top being clamped to the body.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7918991/109259072.jpg

And here is a shot of the side. Note the maple back which was thinned to about 0.30". The limba was thinned to about 1.1" so that the final thickness will be approximately the same as a standard guitar.

Here are a couple pics of the all S inlays on the neck. What I love about Will is that when we talk, he knows instantly what he likes or what he doesn't like. And he has really challenged me on this guitar! I showed Will a few different options for inlay patterns including this one, others were combinations of S inlays and dots. My instinct was that there were a lot of Ss on this guitar! I suggested dots with an S at the 12th fret, but Will preferred this option so I went for it trusting him. And I am so glad I did!! I really like how it turned out. Now I am on to the stainless steel frets and I can fit the neck to the body and carve the neck back.

Hey Tommy!
There are actualyl a few more very simply inlaid or non-inlaid necks coming. Some like them simple and elegant, some like them fancy! Besides, with the tops you guys have chosen, NO ONE really is getting a plain Jane! There is really only one pending order that will qualify as plain to the best of my recollection!

Here is Will's neck pocket. This looks so beautiful in person. The flames showing through and the dark streaks in the Limba. I will be fitting the neck later today and I will take some mockup photos. You can see that the treble side of the neck pocket needs to be trimmed. I leave it on so it can support the jig as I am routing.

imported_Schroeder
10-06-2005, 04:59 AM
Here, these may make you feel better!!! Still some shaping to do in the cutaway. The way I make guitars is very iterative. I work from both ends until things look right then I stop. So I generally will leave a little extra here or there that gets trimmed after the following step. For example I waited to trim the cutaway until the neck was set and placed. Not glued but I knew how it would all look once the neck was there. Anyway, I am getting REALLY excited about this guitar!! Do I have to send it out, Will?!! :D

Here is the initial neck placement. Note extra wood in the cutout adjacent to the neck...
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/William_neckset1.gif

Here is a detail of the cutaway carve being refined...
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/William_neckset2.gif

And here it is with only minor refinement left. I am basically ready to start routing pickup cavities...
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/William_neckset3.gif

For reference, the bridge will be located in line with the split in the S hole.

Can you believe it? I actually tore myself away from the house to do a bit on Will's guitar. I was challenged with trying to make a belly carve in the back of Will's semi-hollow which has a quilted maple back. The area where the belly carve is normally situated is essentially like an acoustic, not much wood behind it so I had to be very careful to not go through the edge and into the sound chamber. Here is what I came up with. It really makes a difference in comfort. The sharp top edge blends into a rounded edge and there is a slight recess that extends a couple inches into the back of the guitar. Subtle but effective. I think it also makes the body look less boxy and much more dramatic, especialy at askew angles.

Notice also that I cut the bridge pickup cavity. I will be trimming a bit off of the bottom of the neck to make it sit a bit deeper into the neck pocket. After that time I will cut the area of the neck where the pickup will be placed.

Some of this was posted in another section but I wanted to keep it in the thread. Here is the latest on Will's guitar: Headstock is complete. Holes have been drilled to accept the tuners.

http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Will/headstock.jpg

Here is a pic of the guide hole for the top and rear cavities for the tremelo. It is placed at the corner of each of the templates to make sure everything lines up correctly (front and back). Sorry about the bad pic, it was taken with the camera phone. If you look closely you can see that I have notes written in pencil on the guitar for which procedure will come next. The two lines you can see coming from the pickup cavity toward the bridge location is the extension of the sides of the neck to make sure that my bridge location lines up perfectly with the position of the neck. You can also see the guide holes for the bridge anchors -very small at this point. The short line between the bridge anchor locations is the mark for scale length.

http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Will/Picture038.jpg

I THINK I have Doc's control cavities worked out if he approves them (e-mail sent...). I hope he has a chance to check them out if he is away on business. There is a lot going on with his electronics including a piezo with preamp so I needed a smaller compartment for the 9 volt. The smaller cover will accomplish that. Otherwise the backplate and cavity would be huge. I think this breaks it up nicely. Covers are made from Brazilian RW.

Just got the guitar thanks all. There is a small issue with the guitar, nothing too big, just looks like a bit of the clear coat was damaged, nothing to get exctited about and I don't know how it could have happen, I will discuss it with Jason. Plays nice, the clean sound is really nice, the peizo is excellent. Really plays great unplugged, the semi hollow realy makes a difference. I played it about 15 minutes. Didn't even the notice the finish problem till I was putting it back into the case. I'm wondering if the case is a bit small? Anyways, gotta go back to the hospital soon, so won't get to crank the baby up till later this week.

Ok got to play it today for about 1 hr.

Guitar feels great and of course looks great. Ok lets get to the tones.

Clean neck, wow, very clear, when split, great strat tones, sounds much more brighter than a couple of my BRW necks, could be the ebony board.

Cranked, sounds real nice. Neck, nice, but much more muddier than my favorite LPs which I guage all my bridge pup sounds, so its gotta be the BRW neck.
Bridge, sounds great, but doesn't have the bite that some of my favorite guitars have. Can't place it, but just doesn't have that growl, that my PRS artist III has with the same pups.

Piezo, WOW, now this is what makes this semi-hollow killer. Just sounds amazing, and the blend is great. Sounds like just playing a great acoustic, It just sings.

I had 5 of favorite guitars out, and a/bed it with the schroeder. Just unplugged and put the other guitar in, all the same settings.

Overall great guitar, you can't have a guitar do everything, even though I put almost everything I could ever want into this guitar, it comes close.

DrPCR--- what pickups do you have installed?

The comment about the muddiness is something ive heard from other BRW owners (of course i cannot test myself as i have never even seen a lefty BRW :( ). Ive gone back and forth on this in my mind, but i also hear others say it adds so much to the sound, and definitely the feel. Anyone else have comments on BRW vs. mohag tone wise?

I had Brazilian neck McCarty that the good Doc steared me towards (Doc was helping me put together a poor mans ME). I though the Mc- pups were total mud, much more so than a mahog neck McCarty and much more than my current McTrem IRW. I swaped it out with an RP I had and it sounded amazeing. The Seymours I have in my Braz neck Schroeder have no mud at all, they are very balanced, full and articulate. I think Braz is a bit senstive to pups and I have no idea what a semi-hallow does to the responce of pups?

I must say that when I first got my schroeder I thought it was muddier than my favorite LP but after playing it more and more, I figured out how to utulize the BRW board and neck as far as the EQing and effects. The PUPS were Wagnor Shredders...going to go with some of Bryan's PUPS now and give them a round :D

I got no "mud" through my 65 Twin Reverb but that is a crystal clear amp. Will, I know you play a lot of gain, I would experiment with the tones of this guitar. Keeping all the settings the same for a semi-hollow and a Les Paul might not get you where you want to go. But as you said, no guitar can do everything the best. I feel like I could strap this guitar on at a gig and play it for four hours. You can get SO many tones out of it. And like you say it is a compromise. The semi-hollow and piezo will make beautiful acoustic-ish sounds!! I think experimenting a bit with the settings or even what amp you play it through could really help. Get a Twin if you don't have one!!! It sounded fantastic in my shop!!

Hope you got my email today.

I just got this pic from Will. I thought i would share!

Looks like there was some rubbing on the case during shipping. The red you can see on the back binding edge is the fur from the case lining. I should note that this case is a fitted case and not the rectangular shaped case that comes with standard Schroeder guitars. I do not anticipate that this will be a recurring problem as it is practically impossible with the rectangular cases.

Will, I hope to get it back at some point so I can touch up the repair. I know you down-played it in your message but it still bugs me!! I want to make it right.
Thanks for the review. I would love to hear clips A/B with your other guitars too!!

Thanks for a very inspiring and challenging build!!! It was truly a benchmark guitar for me with many prototype features that have become standards for Schroeder guitars. Please enjoy it as you get to know this guitar.

Hi all, thanks for all the comments.

I agree with Jason, I didn't tweak the settings, just plugged it in with my standard settings.

I did notice if I cranked up the volume, it sounded better! definately not a low volume guitar.

Its definately a guitar I can play for hrs, feels great and the neck feels great.

I'll try to make some clips comparing it other guitars when I have some time off, it will be awhile though.

Jason, I had a twin, and yes its one of the best sounding clean amps around, but I didn't have a mesa v twin then, so I had to get a dual recto instead.

I played it out of my Koch multitone, and the cleans on that are up there with the twins IMHO but cranked its a demon too.

I have limited experience with Braz necks, so I'm not sure if it's primarily a Braz characteristic, but Tommy and Jason are right that playing with the EQ makes a big difference.

I'm sure when Doc has the time to put down his scalpel and dial it in, it will smoke. Looking foward to Docs clips, he got some fast fingers!! Guess he has lightning finger controll from being in surgery all the time!

Ok, put in some more time with the SC through all my different amps.

Played it through the Marshall JCM, Mesa Dual recto, Egnater.

It did very well in all, and actually sounded the best through the Marshall JCM800. The vintage rock crunch was much better sounding through the JCM. At high gain again, it was lacking some "ommf" but I didn't expect it to be a shredder.

I was playing some old rush through the JCM800 and the SC really nailed some of those tones, and I know why Alex stuck to the ES355 and this howard roberts fusion. Funny, I didn't get much feedback with high gain amps, but with the marshall it was wailing away, which was great with the trem, was really playing with the feedback.

Ok, thats it for now
