I got a chance to do some work on the Tour Guitar this weekend as well. The fignerboard is clamped and being glued. Body was nearly completed a month or so ago.

I think anyone who gets to play this guitar on the tour, has to make a recording with it so we can hear its tone with different amps and different player styles.

Fantastic. Has anyone ever played/heard a rosewood neck with Ebony board before? Is that what is ont eh Chopper?

The Chopper has a Braz RW neck with ebony board. Sounds incredible. I am a big fan of the ebony board/rosewood combo. I want to spread the word with the Tour guitar!

On the Agenda: TOUR ideas.

How the hell will this all come together? I have some ideas. I am thinking about it starting in a REALLY good case. :) Maybe a flight case as long as it doesn't drive up the cost of shipping too high. Then we set up a schedule with anticipated delivery times. The good thing is that if we plan well, the delivery times will be relatively short because the guitar will be going short distances. I am thinking US Postal Service ground but I am open to suggestions. Everyone has a shipping horror story these days. I think I will set up a few polls to get concensus on how long you guys want to keep it, what method of shipping, etc.

Any ideas to make it go smooth, let me know.

imported_dan desy
07-19-2005, 09:13 PM
I don't mean to sound cheap, but I'd like to know what kind of costs we expect for shipping. Also, according to the original tour map, I'd be shipping it to Canada - how much more does that mean?...

Stu, Shhhhh about that SC Trem! But Ebony on Rw would certainly be my choice!
Probably a hipshot trem, too. Ah, to dream! After my upcoming Swan, I'm guessing it'll be a while before I accumulate that kind of money!

Hey Dan, are you going to ship this beauty to me? I guess so. :P

I guess each one is going to cover the charge to ship the guitar to the next guy.

I am also curious about the amount to ship it safe from one point to the next one.

I still can't believe that this tour is really going to happen. I guess it would be one of this great things that come out of the Internet from time to time...

First, Jason and anyone else (Elizabeth, Liz, EB, ____ ?? ) helping to put this tour together, thank you!

I realize this is putting the cart before the horse, but like Dan says, we need some ground rules for the tour. For example, if we decide that 3 days per stop is best, truss rod tweaking should not be done unless absolutely deemed necessary and only then after contacting Jason, as the neck won't fully settle from each adjustment until it's in the next person's hands. Just food for thought.

Another prime example: I prefer .011-.048 strings, but I'm not going to ask that the tour guitar be set up that way.

As a fun ground rule suggestion, we should each supply at least one sticker that's unique to our area of the country (your own band/restaurants/bars/shops etc). Whether or not the stickers should be slapped on the case yet, I couldn't say. What's a rock and roll tour without stickers?

As yet another example, what if a string breaks during the tour? Are we going to have a couple of extra packs of strings in the case for such a thing?

Otherwise, the next person after me's gonna be in for a surprise! Chant it with me: .011, .011, .011 !!!

I was thinking about the abuse that this guitar might suffer going across the country so I decided that I would go with stainless steel frets on the Tour Guitar. They may handle the stress a little better! They are the weakest link when it comes to an oft played guitar. So we'll see if they last longer. They were honestly not that much different to install than nickel-silver.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7937889/105779857.jpg

Now it is on to carving the back of the neck.

Neck carve pics... This is pictured with the neck for Mike's doublecut. I used it as a reference for building this one. That neck has a nice round fat carve, I wanted the same for this one.

Note the yellow crayon line down the center that tells me where NOT to carve. Remember the neck was planed to final thickness so i do not want to cut into that at this point.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com:80/VOL208/995811/7937889/105907053.jpg

Rough carve is completed usomg a bastard file.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com:80/VOL208/995811/7937889/105907049.jpg

Twins... (or triplets, as Bryan's guitar has a very similar neck) The Tour guitar neck is on the top. Notice it is shorter since it will be a 22 fret neck as opposed to Mike's which is a 24.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com:80/VOL208/995811/7937889/105907044.jpg

And here is a shot with the neck profiles mirrored to show the heels are identical and Mike's neck (the 24 fretter) is slightly taller. The Tour neck on the left is still in need of fine sanding (thus the whitish areas) but the shaping is essentially complete.

So maybe stainless frets are STNADARD now!!! :) I did not that the stainless frets were quite a bit harder on the tools when I was file them flush with the fingerboard but that is ok by me. That means that the wear on them will be less.

By the way, Will and Stu, PLEASE post something on your experience this weekend! I would love to here about it. And don't just barry it in this thread. Put it in the Lounge for everyone to check out! MEs? Drisills? I am dying here!! :D

+1

Living in Pittsburgh subjects guitars to some serious extremes. 90+ with 90% humidity in the summer, and 20 degrees with 20% humidity in the winter. If the guitar is gigged (mine will be) it will be subjected to these changes. I would be curious to see what Jason thinks about this...I love the idea of the wood plates, but not at the expense of functionality. I will trust his judgement on this...he obviously knows a helluva lot more about wood and guitars than I do. LOL!!!

imported_Schroeder
08-08-2005, 11:53 PM
Les Paul jack plates are plastic though and usually break because there isn't a lot of room between the hole and the edge. This is a very small piece of wood so the chance of it cracking due to increase or decrease in moisture content are, in my opinion, very small. The chances are much higher that it will break if someone cranks the screws down too tight, or it is slammed on the ground or otherwise abused!! I can't really control that.

I want the Tour guitar to showcase some of the options that you can get through Schroeder guitars. Wood plates, pickup rings, etc are something I want to feature. For you guys ordering guitars, I will put whatever you would like on them! :D

Well, if you have been wondering what I have been doing in my free time...

I have been agonizing over the color of the Tour Guitar! It is so much easier if one of you guys is telling me exactly what you want! But i took teh advice of Shad and Woody who were the only guys to my knowledge who recommended colors for this baby. So I started off staining it a deep brown:
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL208/995811/7937889/107807803.jpg

Then I sanded it down which left the dark areas brown and the light areas nearly bare wood. I probably went through about 7-8 versions of color before arriving at the final color. First it was too orange, then it was too dark, then i saw this beautiful yellow archtop by a guy name Taku Sakashta. http://www.sakashtaguitars.com/Sakashta/archtops/Opera-2/images/ts_opera2_back.jpg And I made it more yellow. I could not be more satisfied. Here it is dry with no finish.

I am off to spray one more coat of sealer and then I can begin the nitro coats. Keep in mind too that the sealer coat is a matte finish so it will really light up when it is hit with the glossy nitro.

imported_Schroeder
08-10-2005, 03:15 AM
Thanks guys. Rob - Sorry, I forgot you had mentioned the burst. I actually considered a very subtle burst and had that in my head as I was dying it (and re-dying it!). But it appears to have a slight burst anyway because of the contours even though it is a uniform stain. Crazy. Thanks for pushing me toward a more natural color guys. I was really leaning toward a candy color like green or red. I am so glad I went with the multi-stain amber. More to come....

I am thinking about calling it "Pale Ale." Sierra Nevada Brewery is in Chico where I went to school for 7.5 years and where I built my first complete six string guitars. Pale Ale is their most famous beer.

The guitar looks great Jason! That is a one piece top isn't it? I guess it hadn't crossed my mind until I saw it with the sealer coat on it. Sweet.

Great beer! Man, I'm thirsty!!!

With a brewery like Sierra Nevada that close, it would have taken me 7.5 years to build anything, let alone a few guitars. :D

Hey guys!
I spent some time last night filling the pores in the black limba. This is a step that I skipped on Bryan's guitar. I ended up putting a LOT more coats of nitro on Bryan's than I planned (which got basically sanded off in the leveling process!). So I am wising up.

I used a rosewood colored pore filler which looks really cool. I will do one more coat of sealer, then another application of filler today. Then it is flat sanding and on to the nitro...

Hey Kev! In my defense I got my BS and a master's in that 7.5 years!! But I had my share of Pale Ale while I was there. Sierra Nevada was still considered a "Micro-Brewery" when I started at Chico in 1990. By 1998, it was about 5 times the size and shipping worldwide! Kind of an inspiring story.

And yes, it most definitely is a one piece top. I also did the boutique guitar hallmark of angling the maple board slightly on the back wood so that it looks more dramatic! You can only do this with a one piece top. Check out the pic below. You can see the screws in the top so it doesn't slip during clamping. Other companies actually use a nail gun to prevent glue slip!!

Maybe not, it might look too cluttered.

The staining in different colors can be done. The key would be to picnstripe over the stransitions so you get a nice distinct line.

Is this how PRS did that red, gold and green rasta Custom that Carlos plays? Or did they manage to line up the stain lines exact?

imported_Schroeder

I was thinking a painted pinstripe like they do on Choppers and Hot Rods at teh edge of the flame. Remember the Tremonti Tribal controversy where the edges were apparently a little fuzzy? This would cover that up. The inlay idea would be very cool and a LOT of work!!

I got the Tour Guitar strung up today and I am all giddy like a schoolgirl!! It sounds better than I ever anticipated acoustically!! I cannot believe the resonance. It is so weird, I move my head toward the headstock and I can hear the notes jumping off the fingerboard and the neck (this neck is extra wide and fairly fat). Then I move my head toward the body and I can hear notes jumping out of the body too. Plus I can feel the resonance in my stomach from the limba and in my hand from the rosewood neck. I am so dang excited to plug this thing in. As soon as I put the first string on and started tuning it, I could tell what it would sound like.

I still have some finish issues to deal with. I have sanding marks that did not buff out that I am going to take care of after the frets are level. The stainless frets are nice even before dressing I can tell they are going to be smooth. Not too much impact on tone but maybe a touch brighter. The ebony is really doing its job to make the attack snappy. As you all probably know by now, ebony is my number one choice for fingerboard wood! And I feel it is an amazing compliment to rosewood necks. But I digress.

Here she is so far... A little rough still but sounding really good!!

Personally, the pecking order should be people who are paying customers and have JS guitars on order IMHO. I think that is fair, then others. We put our money where our mouth is and I think its safe to say we can be "trusted" more. If you don't return the guitar or move it along the chain, Jason keeps your deposit and your new guitar!

imported_Schroeder
09-08-2005, 07:07 AM
Thanks guys and gal! ;)

Just for logistical purposes, the order in which people will receive it is based on geography. That is really the simplest way to get it around the country and the cheapest!! So it will likely start in California and work its way back east (either north of south, just depends on where the bulk of the people are). I hope that makes sense.

I will hopefully have it about wrapped up and begin play testing it in the next 2 weeks.

imported_Schroeder
10-05-2005, 04:28 PM
Hey Jo!
I made this one completely fixed and intonated it based on where the strings leave the bridge. It will be easy to make it adjustable on future models. The other thing I have done with this bridge is cut grooves in the back of the wraparound to guide the strings into the correct location. I mainly wanted to see if it had the tone I was looking for and see if it was strong enough to hold string tension.

imported_Jo
10-06-2005, 01:04 PM
With the rosewood bridge (forgive me because I have no knowledge on how these things work) is there a risk that the tension of the strings would start to dig into the wood, or is BRW that hard?

imported_Schroeder
10-06-2005, 01:53 PM
Jo,
Good question! Brazilian is hard wood. I have actually cut grooves in the back and top o f the bridge since the above pics were taken. This will help keep the strings in the proper spacing. I don't foresee deep grooving to be a problem because once the strings are in place they are not moving back and forth. I suppose if you changed your strings daily and drug the strung over teh top of the bridge it cuold eventually be a problem!

I will be making an ebony bridge (even harder wood than Braz) and I also have an alternate design that will have a harder surface at teh contact point of the bridge. I will keep you posted!!

Hey guys,
Thanks so much Mike!!! It was so great to meet you and the guys yesterday. I really appreciate your input. The reviews on the Tour guitar were pretty dang good. I feel really good about it. The biggest thing to come out of it is that the pickups were a bit too hot. I totally agree but did not have time to swap them out before Sunday. Mike had a really good suggestion about putting a standard, vintage sounding set of pickups in the guitar that everyone could reference. A middle-of-the-road pickup that was not too hot, not too mellow so that guys could guage what they wanted a bit better. Mike, I said it on BAM earlier but DAMN you can PLAY man!!!! Just a monster on the guitar. And a fantastic guy too. I really appreciate how cool you have been to me. This is a pretty daunting task to try to rub elbows with some amazing guitar makers.
More later. It was a long couple of days. Had a fantastic time but glad to be back home...

I checked this guitar out last Sunday at the NorCal jam. Really sweet, and Big Mike was sounding huge on it! Lot's of great ideas and details on this guitar. I dug the ebony on rosewood neck, the "S" jackplate was a cool idea, the logo was tasteful and distinctive and the workmanship was superb. You guys have seen the pics so you know that the cosmetics were killin'. I also thought that the pickups were a little hot for the average guy jamming by himself, but I think that the wood choices/pickup choice would really make this guitar cut great live with a band.

Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say "Hi".
