Ive been around the warmoth website lately, looking at all the different choices for neck material. I got to thinking, iIs it really possible to make an entire neck from ebony? If rosewood feels good, ebony must feel great! I love the smooth stone feel of ebony. Maybe shoot an inlay up the back like a skunk stripe? Im going to be spending a lot of money on my Schroeder. :P

It is absolutely possible to make an entire neck out of ebony. But the ebony that I use is much heavier than rosewood. It would be a heavy neck without careful planning of the overall instrument. For example, I would discourage a LP style body with Fender scale in a 27 fret guitar!!! The top horn is too short, the scale length is too long and the extra frets push the headstock out even more. So if you were to elongate the top horn and do a 24.75" scale, 22 fret guitar (then use a really wide strap!!), you could get away with a solid ebony neck. Totally do-able. Tone wise, I suspect that you would have a fairly bright sounding neck.

Good question. I wondered the same.

i have heard that an ebony board on a BRW or IRW is a combination for killer tone and feel.. with the ebony adding just that little brightness and articulation to balance the darkness/ dampened (smooth) response of the rosewood.

I believe that is Jasons wood combo of choice. That's what Jason is doing for me.
