Welcome to the club Mike!!
Remember that second neck that I built when I was building Bryan's guitar? That will be the neck I am using for Mike's guitar. It is also from the same piece as the Tour Guitar's neck - kinda cool I think.
Here are pics of the neck construction...
Mike's is on the top (more reddish in color) and Bryan's is on the bottom.

Here is the top that Mike picked. It is a really nice tight flame with super 3D figuring. I will do a mockup with the template overlay of the doublecut this weekend.

I've had such a great time watching my guitar being made. Yea I want to play it, but I think going through this proccess will make me that much more attached to this guitar once i get it.
You know I've enjoyed this so much that once i get my guitar (hopefully this week.. :D ) I'll be here everyday looking for updates to you guys' new guitars.

Mike, here are the updates for today. Ready to carve this thing!! Pics are prett self explanitory. The back is fat and is a gorgeous hunk of wood!!! (As requested!) I can't get over the beauty of the flame on your top either. It just looks "right" to me. As much as I LOVE a good piece of quilt, this is a fantastic piece of maple. And the quartersawn flamed maple behaves better than most quilts!! This piece was just perfect. Everything on this guitar is going together easily. I had a chance to cut the rabbit around the edge (down to the faux binding depth). I should get to carving soon enough.
Rough cut...

Here you go, this is what it looks like this very minute. As you can see, I have not touched the back with sandpaper yet! Still has pencil all over it and a bit of glue smear along the seam. It will be nicer when it is sanded!!

DrPCR,
I have a fat back on order as well.
I asked Jason, and Mike's back thickness is "roughly 1.65".
The top on his is a bit thicker right now (3/4" to 7/8") but it will be thinned a bit during the carve." Quoted from Jason.

Here is the headstock... Not the best pic! Sorry about that. The paua center of the S logo is really blue/green in person but changes to a light green in certain light. The paua is crazy and sort of marbly looking. That center circle is surrounded by an aluminum ring. The wings od the S are gold pearl. Still have some final shaping/sanding to do and you can still see glue smear at the end of the fingerboard where the nut will be. But it is about ready to install on the body!

Thought that id spill the beans a little bit as to what Jason and my plans were for the final stages of the guitar. Jason is currently (i believe?) working on adding rosewood purfling to the top of the body. The guitar will finally be finished in natural with the slightest amber tint, much like the chopper guitar. I think the guitar is going to look pretty unique, and natural looking. Seeing as how it is completly handbuilt, i think it all fits a theme. Just curious as to see what the rest of the community here thinks!
Oh and jason, is the neck going to ber carved down with a small heal like the tour guitar was, or carved downt o be flush with the body. Just curious...
Hey Mike, I don't think Jason likes building big heels. From what I have seen he likes the heel to run somewhat flush with the body contour. Like the "Tour Guitar" and Chopper.

I will do whatever you would like of course!! But if you leave it up to me I will leave about an inch of flat on the heel in the same shape as the body at the heel and then contour it into the neck. Does that sound cool?

yea me too!, jason seems to be pretty excited about it, and we both think with the blank fingerboard, rosewood neck/fb, and natural maple finish, the rosewood purfling is just going to to tie the whole guitar together. I think its going to be subtle, yet elegant. Should be a unique guitar, and a nice change from the bright colors and extreme design (not that there's anything wrong with it! In fact my next order...will be most extreme probably!)

yeah man, and I also wanted to comment on the control layout. Looks great, and seems to be functional in the way that I tried to communicate to you. I like the "les paul" sort of vibe to the knob layout, but appreciate how it still has its own identity to it. I was a bit concerned about how the switch would look in that location, but I think it'll look great. REgarding the stain again, I can't even describe how pleased I am. It looks fantastic and I amamazed at your ability to create a vision that I have long been confusing you with. I can't even believe how nicely the flame popped, and without the use of a brightly colored top. I love the subtle elegant look of this guitar, and think the rosewood appointments really tie it together. Its amazing how throughout this whole process, I strated with a pretty simple idea, and even after considering so many changes, basically finished with a similar vision. Sure the rosewood purfling is anything but simple, but it just ties the rosewood neck to the body so nicely. No inlays on this one except on the headstock too! The rosewood knobs are only going to add to the "culminating" effect, and I think the zebra pickups are going to be the right choice. Its just great to see this coming together, and I can't wait to see everyone else's projects come together too, specifially the three others whos guitars are being finished now! Thanks so much Jason, and the wait has been, and will continue to be worth it...It's sure going to be great to finally get my hands on this guitar, but I've got to admit, just checking for updates every day, getting updates, following the progress of my/others guitars, and generally being part of this community, has been worth the price of the guitar, if not more. Its going to be kind of sad when this thread finally comes to a close and tapers off! I guess thats when the singlegut and/or chopper order comes into play! Thanks again Jason, can;t wait for the home stretch!

Ouch!! I go for a compliment and get scorn in return. I was kind of hoping for a charming guy discount on my spec sheet. Looks like I'll be paying extra instead. You'd think after 16 years of marriage I'd be better at them. Then again maybe after 16 years I'm out of practice. Good thing I don't need to attract another wife...I hope!! Funny thing about it is that when I first saw Jason had an assistant the mental image that popped into my head was of Diane from American Hot Rod on Discovery. Seems my mental image was a wee bit off. Jason and Elizabeth do make a cute couple. Anyone know if they are registered at StewMac for wedding presents??

Mike,
Here are a couple shots of your guitar after wet sanding and buffing. Coming real soon! Like we talked about, Jim Wagner is at NAMM so your pickups may be a week or so but that gives me time to final your neck and get everything else dialed in before final assembly.

First, I am going to apologize for my long absence from the board, especially at a critical time when my guitar arrived! Life has been crazy lately...school, new job (monitor my internet use...), and mostly I've finally been busy playing guitar, rather than surfing the boards! That being said, here's my long overdue review of my BEAUTIFUL new guitar!
Looks:
I honestly couldn't have been any more pleased with the way that this guitar came out visually. It is just stunning. It has a certain presence to it, where people just "notice it" when they enter the room. It doesn't have a fancy color, or the most insane quilt top, but people have just seemed to walk into the room with it jaw-dropped. Me? I just love it. It’s got everything that I could want from an esthetic end. A simply gorgeous rosewood neck, with fantastically straight grain (much darker than I expected too!), an amazing flame maple top, and as unique and exotic looking of a piece of black limba on the back as I could have asked for. I just couldn’t be happier. The rosewood knobs and rosewood purfling just look great and really bring the guitar together. Its beautiful, understated, elegant, and also just incredibly impressive, all at the same time.
Sound/Feel/Playability:
I have to admit, I am new to the idea of not playing a guitar before I buy it, especially one where I couldn't even try out a similar model. But, I knew from the start there was just something about Jason and how he builds guitars to be played. Let me tell you, this guitar plays as well or better than anything I've EVER played. My hamer artist feels like a toy next to this thing now! My new Schroeder just plays amazingly well. It has the feel of a broken in guitar that I have been playing for years, especially when it comes to the neck. I have been listening to Jason talk about how "there is just something about this neck" for a long time now and I finally get it. It’s not too fat, but its certainly not thin, plays faster than about any neck I have ever played, and still has the chunk of a neck that I love. It almost feels like Jason carved this with a mold of my hand, but hearing from him, it seems like anyone who picks up this guitar feels similarly.
As far as the actual sound of this guitar goes, I was a bit surprised. I originally expected this guitar to cover one type of ground REALLY well, but in fact, it is much more versatile than I expected. Originally I hoped for a bit more articulate, playable Les Paul type for tone. The WCR goodwood/darkburst combo, as well as the extra chunk of my guitar, get this guitar there NO problem, and sounds better than I ever could have wanted. But, because of the scale length and other factors like the VERY useable tone/volume adjustments, I can get a lot of different tones that are very useable. The guitar just sounds grat though. Very classic, but also very modern in terms playability and other factors.
Other:
Barely everything on this guitar was just perfect the second I opened the case. Speaking of the case...wow! It’s fantastic, and while bulky, certainly makes me feel that my investment is safe! The setup/action was dead on out of the box and couldn't have been done any better.
I love the control layout on this guitar too. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but hey, isn't that what a CUSTOM guitar is for?! The rosewood knobs did rub a little but when I first got the guitar, and I can tell that they move a little bit when the humidity changes. I spoke to Jason, and he realizes this little issue and has already worked to remedy it (rosewood knobs w/ threads inside rather than just pressure fitting over the pot shaft). Talk about service, Jason was incredibly concerned and willing to do anything to make it better, despite the small, small nature of the issue. Regardless of the small amount of rubbing, the knobs are very useable, look AMAZING, and are in the perfect layout for me.
Overall:
As I am sure it is obvious, I couldn't be happier. I always see glowing reviews of guitars by people on these forums, and wish people would be a little more critical sometimes. I tried to be here, honestly, and I just draw a blank when thinking of negatives to this guitar. It is perfect for me, and that is truly what Jason offers. The guy just knows how to build guitars meant to be played, and has amazing knowledge that will help ANYONE get to where they want to be tone wise. Jason is just a master artist as I am sure it is evident, and will also build a guitar that will rival any in terms of beauty, design and playability. I love my guitar, and it would take an unbelievable amount for me to ever part ways with it, even being the poor college student I am now.
Thank you so much Jason. The wait was worth it, and it’s actually a little sad knowing that I won’t have updates to look for, and phone updates from you. You have been an amazing friend, and have been a model of customer service. No matter what direction you take this business, I know you will be successful. That was amazing to read. I`ve dealt with other custom builders, but I`ve never seen anyone as passionate about customer service as Jason and Elizabeth. Everyone says it, but no one does it. This is the kind of service that makes me want to own one of Jason`s pieces.
