Hi all! Nice to be at a forum that we may be able to look at one day and say, "yea I was one of the first!", because I think we all know that Jason here may very well be going places with these guitars. But anyway, Jason just started some sork on the guitar that he is building for me. Just FYI, its a doublecut style sililar to bryans, but with a few differences that are my personal taste. Like Bryans, it will be maple top on black limba body witha rosewood on rosewood neck. Mine will be a little bit larger in girth to give it a bit more thickness to the sound. Also, mine will have only two humbukers rather then the h-s-h configuration. Also, the electroncs configuration will be more to my tastes (havet completly figured out what those are yet...). BUt anyway, Im putting a pretty nice set of pickups in this guitar, I opted to go all out and although its costing me another 250 dollars to get "boutique" pickups, i think its going to be worth it in the end. As of now, I am leaning towards getting the WCR Goodwood humbuckers as Jason has suggested. I just want to know though if anyone has any other suggestions that they might think of. I play a lot of Jam style rock so my pickups/guitar MUST be very versitle. I like to do the smooth santana sound a lot of the time, but when it comes to rhythm, i need a more defined warren haynes esque tone. I play through a mesa/boogie mark iv for reference as well. ALso regardless of what my pickup configuration is, there will be coil taps installed in some way, so my pickups should be able to take that too. Thanks in advance!

...oh and if you want to check out my guitar's progress, check "mike's doublecut" in the progress page.

The Goodwoods sound like a great choice.
I wouldnt be surprised if i drop a set in to my guitar eventually.
I used to be hesitant about the cost of botique pups, then I got a set of Bardens for my tele and I'll tell you theres such a huge difference in the quality of tone from these pups that the extra charge for being boutique is way worth it.

From what I've heard and read about the WCRs, I don't see how that could be a bad decision, especially since you can talk to Jim about the type of guitar his pickups are going into.

I'm also thinking though, that based upon your description of your guitar and playing style demands, maybe a set of RP pickups from PRS could be a good match. Since they are being used in the solid rosewood necked Modern Eagle, they could be an alternative. They will be available to us, the unwashed masses, on August 1st.

hm, i havent really ever thought about prs picups. I love PRS gutiars, but honestly if i ever owned one, id probably rip the pickups out pretty quick, cause i think they sound sterile. But then again, ive only played what they put on the custom line. Maybe those modern eagle ones would be nice...especailly cause they go on a like 5800 dollar instrument!

Actually I believe the RP pups aren't PRS pups.
They are made by Ralph Perucci, who plays 2nd guitar in Paul Smiths band.

You know guys, I love PRS as much as the next guy, maybe more. Originally I wanted to put a PRS trem, tuners, pups, and stuff like that on my guitar, but I realized. WHY???

If I wanted another PRS, I can just buy one. I'm getting a custom built JS guitar.

So no, I will not be getting any PRS stuff on it. Its not going to be a PRS wanna be or knock off guitar, ITS going to be a JS guitar. HELL PRS didn't use other people hardware and stuff.

Thats my 2 cents.

Ok, so what maker can make pups like PRS #7s for my JS singlecut? haha just kidding.

I own a ton of guitars with most of the big name booooooteeeeek pups...

Voodoo
Lollar
Rolph
Holmes
Fralin
Haussel
etc...

The two that really rise to the top are Voodoo and Haussel. Maybe some of you can justify $500+ for a set of Holmes, but I just can't do that. I hear *very* little difference between the Voodoo 59 and the Holmes. The Haussel pups are my current favorite because of their overwhelming array of great sounds. They sound great in every position, split, volume dropped, tone backed off...you name it. There isn't a bad sound to be found. If you are looking for the vintage PAF sound, then my nod goes to the Voodoo 59. If you are looking for something unique, with its own sound and vibe, there is nothing like the Haussels. I have them in all three of my Hubers, and those pups really put those guitars over the top. I am considering putting them into my Schroeder, but that is still up in the air right now.

Also...I firmly believe that all of these pickups are tremendous, and each offers something different. When matched with the right guitar, all of them are outstanding.

My Schroeder is going to have PRS RP pickups in initially, the finest 'PRS' pickups I've personally heard. I may opt for a pair of custom wound 'buckers when I get the guitar but I wanted to put a known quantity in there initially to help guage and understand the guitar when it is completed.

If I do go down the custom pickup route, I will once again be giving Tim at Bare Knuckle Pickups (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk) a call. BKs are such great things, in my opinion the very finest upgrade you can give a guitar. They are UK based but I can't strongly enough recommend you give them a try.

Q.

ps Click HERE (http://www.haeussel.com/) for the Haussel pickups website.
pps Just found a link to a review of some Bare Knuckle pickups for those who might be interested. Review is linked on the BKP forum, you can find it HERE (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=131).

Huge WCR fan here, I would get ahold of Jim, let him know what is getting built and the tone you want. I have Goodwoods in my Thorn and it sounds pretty decent. :)

No I didn't Stu...what did I miss??

Haven't tried Fralins in the Studio, but I use the Blues Specials in my strat.

And I love the Artist Bridge pup too.

CarlWerkmeister has the Fralins in the neck and the artist pup in the bridge of his PRS Studio.
