Johnson ordered his guitar VERY early on (3rd or 4th as I recall) and we were hung up a bit trying to find the right top. So I got him a little closer to the right place in line today. Here is the second SC proto. This is Easter Maple and it is amazing stuff. So much character! I know this guitar is going to be a player too. Not just from the feel and tap tones of this top (which are amazing be the way!!) but because it looks absolutely killer from the playing position looking down at the body.
Here it is after the body shape was cut...
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Johnson/body-carve-flat.gif
And after the carve was mostly done. Here is the cutaway laid back at an angle. The the following two pictures of me roughing in the cutaway contours. Check out that mineral streak on the treble side of the guitar!! You will not mistake this one in a lineup. I should note that this type of figure and mineral streaking was requested by Johnson. I really hope that this captures the look we were going for. It just has that old-school mojo to my eyes.

And here it is with the carve complete. Not the grain lines and how swirly they are. And while the flame IS symmetrical across the two halves of the bookmatch (this will be more apparent after it is stained and finished), the grain is asymmetrical. It gives the top tension that is very cool, IMO.

Just like you said earlier Woody, this guitar is looking like it will be a perfect blend of classic and modern styling.
A note on the top--I love the way the "north/south" grain traffic is different, yet complimentary to the "east/west" grain traffic. It's both subtle and dramatic at the same time....is that possible? :)
Very nice!

Here is a series of pics that show the sunburst process for Johnson's Traditional Singecut. He was looking for a faded cherry sunburst finish on his Eastern maple top.
I started with the body final sanded to 220:
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/Johnson/johnson_stain1.jpg
Then I applied an amber stain to the top:

Here are some updated finish pics for Johnson...
I thought the back looked a bit washed out with the sunburst on the top so Johnson and I talked about doing a shade on the back of the guitar. The result is a vintage brownish amber that looks just beautiful in person. I will obviously take more pics of the guitar in the daylight but this gives an idea about the blend of the top and back. I also "adjusted" the sunburst to make it look a bit more vintage. I am very pleased with the results!

Johnson,
Your SC is officially in cure! That limba was very porous and took quite a few coats and wet sanding episodes before it was "flat" but it is officially hanging for cure as we speak. So it will be ready for final sand and buff in a couple weeks. I just did a rough cleanup on the fingerboard before this photo was taken. It has been masked with tape for a while now!!
