Here is Ben's top gluing up and a pic of a carbon copy of his neck!! Johnson's neck is also from the same hunk of wood. I will take more pics along the way but it is a twin of this one!

This pic does not come close to showing the craziness of the figure on this piece!!
http://www.schroederguitars.com/p/images/Ben/top_joined.gif

Flamed limba with a really cool streak running up the center. These necks will be true one-piece necks with no "wings." This board is a little over 3.5" wide.

Hmm..

Deciding between 24.75' and 25' scale lengths for my SC.

Which should i go for?

24.75 for classic fat les paul tone? 25 for modern rock? problem is that i wanna do both.

guitars i currently own now:

Vanzandt '59 replica strat 25.5'
PRS Custom 24 fret, 25'
Hamer Newport w/ Bigsby 24.75'

i can go back and forth between these scale lengths with no problem.

current specs for the SC:

maple top, limba body and neck, 12' fingerboard radius, tunomatic bridge, 2 humbuckers.

decisions... decisions..

I have been recently deciding myself betwwen a 25" or a 24.75". I play 2 McCarty models and those are 22 frets @25" and a Strat @ 25.5. But recently I recently purchased at a Pawn Shop a Schecter 24 Fret 24.75" PT Blackjack. Good deal for only $175 in near perfect condition. :D

The crazy thing is that I have actually been noticing that I seem to play more confortably the Schecter than the other guitars. The neck just seems right to me. I use 10-52 strings so the tension feels good. Switching between the PRS and the Schecter is noticebly different. I notice that with the PRS's I have to work at playing. Something I never really noticed until recently getting the Schecter. Don't get me wrong, I still love my PRS's. But I am leaning more on getting my Schroeder done @ 24.75 with 24 frets.

On a different note, The Schecter came with these amazing sounding pickups. I was completely shocked when i took them out to see what they were. Kent Armstrong humbuckers. The neck is a M213K and the bridge a M214K. Very good pickups. I was shocked to find out that they sell for about $40 each. Very articulate pickups. I like em..

Will.....That's the beauty of an open mind....& a "blind" test. We so often condition ourselves that older, more expensive etc, is necessarily better. I myself love to find a deal, or something overlooked that's just right! Congrats!

Hey Ben.
I think alot of scle length is personal comfort. I know what you are saying about "classic fat les paul tone", but if two Les Pauls were made identical or Schroeders were made identical, do you really think .25 of an inch would make a substabtial difference tone?

imported_edgarallanpoe

Good point. I would say that the difference would be very subtle. I happen to prefer the feel and note clarity of a full scale guitar, and the difference between that and a short scale in definitely noticable, but I would doubt that I would hear much of a difference in a 25" scale guitar. This is a good question and I would guess that it would have a lot to do with the particular players playing style. A rock player with high gain amps might not notice a difference at all, but a jazz player who keeps it clean and plays complicated chords might hear a *huge* difference.

imported_Benster
03-01-2006, 06:40 PM
hmm, i'm leaning toward a more classic les paul kind of tone for this guitar (well, as classic as it can be, considering the choice of woods) so i think i might go with 24.75'.

besides, i already have 2 PRS's with 25' scale necks.. time for something different?

I've more or less decided on a finish for the top, which is some kind of orangey burst.

some examples of what i mean:

I think i'm going to go for cascading star inlays on the fingerboard, something similar to but not exactly like Gibson's Starburst inlay. Always wanted a guitar with stars on the fingerboard!

Here's a crude photoshop of what i have in mind (roughly!)

Jason, i found a description of the neck shape i'd like, on Suhr's site:

56 Big V - big from .880" to .960", it rolls in at the fingerboard and is a soft V that tapers to almost no V. Recommended for V neck fans.

I'd like it to be chunky and have a medium V shape right from the nut, and slowly tapering to a softer V after the 12th fret.. is it possible?

Well, Ben can attest to the fact that this guitar has been put through a lot!! We made some last minute changes to the electronics that ended up being a bit more challenging than anticipated. We put a 5 way rotary in the 3 way position which is a lot more difficult than it sounds! Had to modify the cavity and enlarge the hole between the pickups. The wiring was a bit of a nightmare but it is going to be a very versatile guitar!!! Ben has been a saint while I struggled with completing this guitar!!

Sort of funny, I did not notice the wire on the ground in thephotos while I was taking the pics! These have nothing to do with the guitar!! LOL. Just some old wires from a shed we tore down last summer!

the recording was done with the schroeder through a tube preamp, direct to the various amp models and effects in Native Instruments Guitar Rig, into Logic Pro. no external pedals or amps.
