Hi Dave, My name is Will. I have seen your top in person and it's insane! Your Mahogany back is also pretty sweet. Good choices!
I am also going with a maple top/mahogany back. BRW neck w/ebony board. Your going with Mahogany neck right? Are you doing a Rosewood fretboard or a ebony?

will,
my goal for this guitar is to emulate the Anderson Cobra (prolly one of the best short scale guitars out there) and get some of the strat bite with the 'Paul warmth.
Mahogany back and neck with a rosewood board and the maple cap. :)
it's a beautiful thing.

We emailed you Dave. You asked me to send you an email in your message. Late here now but I will call you this weekend. The only progress to report is on is your neck blank and fingerboard blank are on the bench with about 5 others and I will be getting the production of the neck laid out fairly soon. There are 10 or so orders in front of you so hang in there!! please remember I had to build the new shop and that took about 6 months out of my building time. I really appreciate your patience. Lots of progress being made.

Some progress pics for ya Dave!! Straight outta the CNC!!! Just kidding! Spent the day with your guitar Dave. Coming together really well!! The neck carve is just killer!! Nice and round and very comfortable. I trued up the horns on the body and drilled the two mini toggle switches. I have this arrangement on the redwood SC (for coil tapping) that i just finished and really like the placement.
Jut WAIT to see the top come to life when I stain it. This is a fantastic flame!!!! It is bone dry and sanded to 150 in these pics so it is somewhat dull looking. But it gives a better idea of the contours.

Well, similar but different! Notice this does not have other switches (3-way or 5-way). Dave wanted this one to have two mini toggles that will be on/off/on that will allow each pickup to individually switch between series (coils in standard humbucking mode), off, and coils tapped.

jason already answered the colour question but in regards to the switching...
ok, i have to admit it. I LOVE anderson's Switcherroo system. so, I'm having Jason do a modified (and much simpler, i hope) version of that.
pickups are 4 conductor Goodwoods (iirc) and each will be tapped.
further, I will be able to toggle each on independently (neck split and bridge series, for example) and, with the blower switch (semi-redundant but bridge in series) i can just go straight to bridge and then back to whatever i was at before.
:)
i can't wait to see the colour samples myself....who knows? this might be done by my birthday!

Hey Dave,
It is telling me that it is a private page and i don't have permission to view it. Any suggestions? Feel free to email it to me. PERFECT timing. I finished a bunch of little detail things with your guitar yesterday including:
Flush sanding the side dots
Set neck angle
Final sanded the neck
Glued the neck into the body
So we are ready for stain my brotha!! I will try to find it through the front door of your Flickr account.
BTW, you got a really nice compliment on your guitar yesterday. An old-timer was in the shop. Really great guy named Randy Thomson who is sor of the original guitar builder in this area. He is a friend of James Russell. James and Randy were over checking things out and James was borrowing a part of my shop. Randy saw your guitar and asked a few questions about it. He said, "Now that is the guitar that I would buy!" He really liked the mahogany and maple combo with the ebony board. Should be a good one!!

Here is the first shot at Dave's top color in Maddie Blue! It looks more blue than the picture of Maddie but in person (I don't actually have Maddie here but i do have photos of her eyes!) the two colors look really really close. More of a gray-blue. This is after one shot of clear over the top. You can see some reflections along the horns at the high points.

This is already a double stain. I stained it relatively dark so that the dark flames would look like the outer portion of Maddie's eyes. Then I sanded it way back. It looked very similar to a Faded Denim Modern Eagle at that point! Then I came back in with a weaker gray blue to color the almost white flame. If I hold the guitar up to the monitor they look VERY close to the same color!!! If the color needs to be tweaked now I will use a shade coat like I did on Shad's. I will take more pics in different lighting. The thing with blue stains is that it will look different in different light. Just like anything I suppose! Hope it is close Dave. She is such a cut kid and has beautiful eyes! Makes me want to do one for my daughter.

i was just curious about the process :)
how long does it typically take to cure?
dave
Schroeder
07-16-2007, 02:51 AM
Well, it will take several days of applying coats of finish, wet-sanding and so on. Then it will sit for about two weeks. If you decided to go satin then I can start assembly immediately, if you want a gloss finish, the guitar has to be wet-sanded then buffed prior to assembly. This can take an additional week or so.

By the way, here are the possible pickup combos with this switching system:
Bridge Humbucker in Series (series = full humbucking operation)
Bridge Humbucker in Parallel (parallel gives a pretty convincing singlecoil tone)
Neck Humbucker in Series
Neck Humbucker in Parallel
Bridge/Neck - both in Series
Bridge/Neck - both in Parallel
Bridge Series/Neck Parallel
Bridge Parallel/Neck Series

yeah, i had the Anderson switcheroo on my Hollow-drop top....amazing system and once you get the hang of it, it's so easy....
basically, you create a "preset" of sorts (the blower) and have another position ready (neck in split, for example)...
cheers,

Congrats on another out the door J! This is a great sound and great looking guitar-- almost looks like a Faded Blue Jean ME finish with gloss...

Great job guys. Question J. You wrote that a humbucker in parallel gives a pretty convincing single coil sound. Can you explain the tonal difference of going parallel with a switch vs coil tapping it?

Wow...that "blower switch" is a nice feature! All of those tonal combinations will be fun to play with.
Oh and the color is still just awesome...makes me want to switch my color from Charcoal Burst everytime that I see it. Gettin' harder and harder to fight the urge...must stop looking!

One of my faves so far. Probably one of the best looking trans blue finishes I`ve ever seen. Beautiful guitar and a great way to pay tribute to your beautiful little girl. Great idea.
