Hey guys.
Tony and myself have been discussing rigs.

I'm a bedroom player that will hopefully being jamming soon with some guys. I'm really a newbie to amps and I'm real lazy, so I love presets. To keep it easy I am runnng a Pod XT-Live through the effects return of an all tube Peavey XXX combo (this bypasses the Peavey pre-amp). It sounds really good. I tried running it through the front of the amp, but couldn't get the sound I wanted. The three channels of the XXX sound excellent on their own, but the XT is great for lazy bums like me.

My rig is very simple..I don't use many effects. I am a plug and play type of guy.

For amps, I use two Fargen Bordeauxs, depending on the gig. One is an EL34 based fire breather and the other is a sweet 6L6 based amp. Both have reverb, and both are heads. Both are 2 channel amps, very simple, one clean channel and the other overdriven with a master volume. I have a custom made 2x12 cabinet that a buddy of mine made for me that I take to all gigs. Its is the best sounding 2x12 I have ever heard and it kicked the shit out of my Splawn 4x12 that I had. Effects are used very sparsely. I start with a Teese Wizard Wah that goes into a HBE Dos Mos. The Dos Mos is a dual booster pedal that is very cool. I keep the first channel on almost all night long to kick the front end of the amp a bit, I only use channel two of the pedal when I coil tap, this compensates for the volume drop when you tap a humbucker. From there it goes into a DLS Ultra Chorus that I only use for some of the Police songs we cover. After that it goes into a TIM overdrive pedal that is only used for songs that require an over the top gain sound. Again, it is used very little. After that it goes into a Monster Effects Swamp Thang for some tremolo effects that I use for a whopping two songs...lol. For the vast majority of the evening, my tone is comming from the Dos Mos and my amp...thats it.

Cool thread..I look forward to seeing some other live rigs.

Oh...and by the way...my rig before this was a POD Pro into a Boogie SImul 295 power amp. It was a killer sounding rig, but I sat down one day and realized that I was only using 3 presets and no effects!! LOL!! It was kind of like killing a fly with a sledgehamer. LOL!! The PODs get a bad rap from purists, but they can deliver some seriously convincing and cool tones when they are applied correctly. Remember to keep the cab sim *off* when playing live...it buggers up the sound. I was never able to get the cab sim to sound good in a live setting. It was awesome to record with though.

Here is a pic of the 6L6 Bordeaux head and the cab I use. The cab is a laquered tweed covered 2x12 that is ported on the top. You can see the ports through the grill if you look hard enough.

Tony, the fact that you have two Bordeauxs is just too funny. For the last few weks, I have been talkin to Cliff Cultreri about trading my Fargen Soloway Classic in for a Bordeaux.

How do you like them?

Hands down, the finest amps I have ever played or owned. And I have owned damn near everything...lol. You name the big name, I have owned it. Here is the short list

Bogner
Soldano
Boogie
Marshall
Laney
Vox
Matchless
Roland
Fender
VHT
Metaltronix
Dr. Z
THD
Line 6
etc...etc...

My Bordeauxs are both custom jobs, and the 6L6 one is the third one he ever made. The EL34 head has more sizzle and more gain on tap, but my original 6L6 amp is just so bad assed. Everyone who played it falls over. The articulation, even at high gain and volume levels is awesome. Hell...I could, if so inclined, not even switch channels at a gig. The gain channel is so touch sensitive, that I could roll the volume and back the pick attack off to get a clean sound. Seriously...Ben is the man. I have been completely amp gas free for well over two years, and I haven't missed any of the amps that are gone. This is my sound. End of discussion.

Now stop calling me Tony...my name is Rob. ROTFLMAO!! :P

So....Rob,

I'm glad to hear you like the Bordeuax. I'm torn between that and the Suhr OD100.

Thanks for the Fargen GAS man!!

Unfortunately the Suhr is something I have never tried so I cannot help you there. I will say this about Ben though. He is hands down the most pleasant person to deal with. This guy really took the time to listen to me and hear what I wanted. So many times, guitar and amp makers make what *they* want instead of what the customer wants. Ben is the opposit. Both of my experiences were amazing, and he delivered everything I asked for. Give the guy a call...it can't hurt. Tell him that Rob Tennant from Pittsburgh sent you.

I'M Tony! Got a problem with that?!!!........Hehe! Anyway, as far as my rig goes...The effect part is constantly changing/evolving, with the wah, big muff, L6 Filter modeler in the front end with the time-based stuff in the loop(s). For effects, in general, I usually go for the stuff that everybody ISN't using. You know, the weirdo/cheepo, old stuff that nobody wants....until I sell it. THEN it becomes collectable, hehe! For amps, I A/B between a Triple Rec(anybody want to trade straight-up for a Dual?)through a 4x12 loaded with G12-M70's for the Modern tones & a Carvin Vintage tube Series 50 watt(4-EL84's in Class A/B) head through a Carvin open-backed 4x10 cab loaded with 2 Kendrick & 2 Mojo ceramic Jensen clones for the "vintage" tones. The Recto does what Recto's do & the Carvin gets great sweet overdrive & crystalline clean tones. The Carvin's a very under-rated "sleeper"!
While I don't consider myself a purist, I can accept a "processed" sounding effected tone, because that's what it is!, but an un-effected tone shouldn't sound processed, IMHO. There's nothin' like an overdriven tuibe amp, or the clean either, for that matter!
My suggestion to Stu, was to get a nice tube combo & maybe a couple of pedals & keep it simple, at the start. I just think all the modeling will make those beautiul guitars of Stu's sound so, "generic", for lack of a better word. I just think a sweet guitar, through a nice tube amp is the best thing to fall back on in a pinch.
But, all-in-all, it's your tone & your gear, so whatever pleases your ears is what counts. Who cares what I think?......sometimes even I don't, hehe. The best to all of you in the New Year & in your quest for THE tone!
Tony

I use a Pod XT Live into a Peavey Classic 30 combo.
It's easy to use and I can get good tones quickly.
The best part is I can carry it all by myself in one trip.. :D

Wow! So many POD XT Live users here :D

Home rig:
POD XT Live -> Tech 21 Power Engine 60. When i wanna practice in stereo, i add a Yamaha FB20 Bass amp, which works surprisingly well.

Live Rig:
POD XT Pro with FBV Shortboard, Stereo -> P.A. (7000 seater auditorium)
Monitored through a Furman in-ear monitor system
This setup belongs to my church, though i sometimes bring my XT Live and use it instead. They sound exactly the same to me 8)

My XT Live replaced a helluva lot of boutique pedals and a head/speaker cab. Some say i'm nuts and that i must've lost my sense of good tone but it really works for me. :D

let's see...my rig is currently:

anderson HDT Walnut --> Toadworks Mr. Squishy --> Menatone Red Snapper PCB --> Demeter FOD-1 --> Fulltone OCD --> Ernie Ball Volume pedal --> Boss DD-6 --> Bad Cat Cur IIR 1x12.

Right on!

I bought the Carvin on a bit of a whim. A great deal was presented to me that I could not pass up. I fully expected to sell it after a few months. Well, a few months have turned into a few years, and it's still here. Funny how that works sometimes :D

Hey guys,
Thought I'd spend some time here... Been pretty hectic!!! My rig is sounding so killer! I have been jamming through the old school rig that i used several years ago. Boss V-Wah then through the Mesa Boogie V-Twin into the Fender Twin Reverb (65 RI). I am supposed to receive my new cabinets to separate the Fender twin combo into a head and a bassman cab. So excited. I will show pics and post clips when it is here. I also have some new in the box Celestion G12H speakers and a set of Celestion Vintage 30s to try. Shovelhead suggested that I mix and match the Vintage 30 and G12H's for a fuller sound. I will report back when I have time to actually play!!
Cheers!

Glad to hear from you, our Grand High Exaulted Mystic Ruler"! I'm also glad to hear you have returned to the realm of tubes from the digital wasteland of the Johnson wormhole. I must say that even though Adrian Belew, one of my absolute favorites, used them for years. I've always yearned to hear him through tubes too! It's hard to beat a twin for clean. Hope the new digs are coming along for you/us, but you have to take a break sometime, just to remain semi-sane! Remember...we're on YOUR side!

Some cool rigs here...

Mine is pretty simple, I'm mostly jamming and playing small places.

Guitars: Either my Thorn or a Fender CS Strat

Amp: My Fuchs DRRI is getting pretty much all the playing time right now.

Effects: My board has a CJOD, Paul Cochran's Tim and Timmy pedals, a Teese wah, TC Electronic chorus/flange and an old Boss DM2 delay.

my live and recording rigs are all very simple plug and play

live:
LP into tuner and then into Morley Bad Horsie before going into the input of Triple Rec.. Boss DD-5 and MXR Micro Amp are ran through the effects loop otherwise known as my solo button...and the actually Mesa Boogie Solo button is used as a chorus boost

recording is always done dry with a Fender Twin, Peavey Classic 50 or a Mesa Boogie DC-5 and with various guitars...whatever the person/producer wants, they pay the bills haha

Man, now there's a good question....

I spent a lot of time with a Mesa Road King and Tromoverb as my two main amps, we're a 3-piece with just me on guitars so I have a stereo rig and make a BIG noise! But I've been gravitating to different things recently so been doing some experimentation. Some nights it'll be both Mesas, some will be just one, some will be a Marshall half stack or my white Bluesbreaker. I think I decided where all this experimentation is headed a few weeks ago: thinking of the TremOVerb on one side and a Bad Cat Hot Cat or Trem Cat on the other (1x12 combo).

Pedal-wise it's also been equally experimentational recently... all the way from far two many pedals on 2 boards to just DD6, tuner, Keeley BD2 and Bad Cat 2-Tone.

I'd love for my set-up to just be guitar, couple of pedals and Bad Cat 1x12 amp, but having two amps definitely fills us out.... the two Mesas was great but perhaps just a little too Mesa on the whole, so I think ultimately it'll be the TremO and the Cat. It's fun to experiment though, good times.
