I did a little demonstration for Will today on how I carve bodies. I completed John's top carve, belly carve and roundover on the back edge. Check out the gallery on the website (Picture #37 of the Shop Photos). Really a gorgeous piece of maple!! Nice selection Johnny Boy!!! More photos coming...

OK Johnny Boy! Inlays on the headstock and 12th fret are done. 12th fret inlay is rippled abalone with paua and aluminum in the center breaking it up. Radius is done on the fretboard. Getting close!

OK everyone, I've got a pretty cool story about the 12th fret inlay. Jason was working on an original take-off of the Schroeder "S" logo for me and decided to do some research on my last name, which in its native German means "butcher". So as a connection to the origin of my surname he designed the butcher's cleaver that you see pictured above separating the S wings. The blade of the knife is made of aluminum, the handle is paua and the S wings are rippled abalone like Shad's "7". I was expecting an original design but to have Jason put such effort and consideration into it makes it truly special. Jason, thank you again so much! Gents, we are lucky to have a builder that puts such heart into his work!

John,
Here is a pic of the VERY rough carve of the neck. Pretty ugly at this point but man does Braz RW smell nice!! This is actually a very physical procedure. There is usually some sweat and a bit of blood that is put into each carve!!
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/john%20neck%20carve.jpg
here is a pic of your neck carve completed (top). Gorgeous piece of Braz!!! I have since drilled the tuner holes. Pics to come... Love that limba back too!!

Here is how I mark the bridge locations. I extrapolate the outer edge of the neck to the body and find the center point. If all goes well, this is precisely at the center joint of the top. If you look closely you can see the pencil mark on the center joint at the midpoint of the bridge location. Then I adjust for intonation and mark the holes for the bridge bolts.
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/john%20bridge%20location.jpg
And here I have trimmed the end of the fingerboard and neck heel to allow for the neck pickup. You can still see some tool marks that I will sand out.

Too many!!! But at this point, I would not have it any other way. I generally do a rough shape, then begin taking off the wood near the heel and behind the net, then gradually refin and refine and refine until it feels right. And I keep coming back until I work out all of the small flat spots and make sure it is round and feels comfortable. It is very gratifying work though!!

Here are some pics of John's body coming to life!!! John wanted a darker and browner Tiger Eye-ish color. Here is how it happened.
Here is the body with all woodwork complete.
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/john%20stain1.jpg
And here is the first stain coat, a very dark blackish brown. You can see areas of the top that are lighter because they have dried a bit before the photo was taken.
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/john%20stain2.jpg
Schroeder
10-29-2006, 06:30 AM
The next step is to let the finish dry and sand it back to reveal the lighter figure. This is a weird angle but I am in the process of sanding here. You can see some very dark spots that still need sanding. If you can't tell, this is a very tedious process that one can easily mess up!! The sanding has to be very even.
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/john%20stain3.jpg
Here it is sanded and ready for the last color stain coat.
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/john%20stain4.jpg

Hey John, so far I really like the SD’s. I only owned one Brazilian neck guitar prior to this one, so I really didn’t know what pups would work well with my Schroeder specs. Jason’s advice was to go with pups I am familiar with and we could take it from there. I always liked SD 59\JB combo for ash bodied maple necked guitars. Jason helped me a lot by listening to the clips on the SD web site. Jason’s ear is MUCH more in tune than mine. For my playing preferences we went the Alnico II neck and SH-5 Custom on the bridge. They both sound very full when untapped and tap very well. With my electronics, I can tap them independently of each other so you can really hear it when one taps. So far so good. I’m currently in the market for a new amp. So if they need tweaking, there are many pick-up winders that can tweak them.
JohnnyBoy
01-15-2007, 05:09 PM
Stu, I talked to Jason yesterday and we were pretty much on the same page regarding pickups as well; go with the known and take it from there. I ended up going with a similiar setup, I'll have an Alnico II neck and Pearly Gates bridge. It must be cool with the tapping abilities on your setup. It's really getting close for me now!

With a BRW neck I love how Haeussel pickups sound.
I've tried three guitars with a BRW neck and Haeussel pickups and they sounded really good.
I like the Haeussel more with BRW than with a mahogany neck.
On my second Schroeder I think I'll go either with haeussel or WCR

John,
I sent you the tracking info, hope you received it. Should be there Thursday! Ya, the guitar cuts really well. The attack is largely from the ebony board. The overall tone is very balanced and fat. If you notice too, when I did the Pink Floyd solo, I did the 2 1/2 step bend with no fretting out. Then with the note still ringing out I downbend and then upbend another full step and still have a note ringing out. I wanted to show that the fretwork was done properly!! Anyway, I wish I had spent a little more time with it after it was done but maybe you can report back on how it sounds through other gear! Have fun John and let us know when you get it!

Now I feel like that scene in Risky Business when Cruise is stuck in school and the clock starts to move backward!! :D Reports are that the box looks undamaged so she should be fine. Hmmm, suddenly I'm feeling very sick...

No problem John.
I wrote this on the box:
EXTREMELY FRAGILE!
PLEASE HANDLE WITH CARE!!
THANK YOU! :)
Maybe it worked?! :) I figured it would either cause someone to be very consciencious or piss someone off so that they dropped it down the stairs!!!

Arrived today safe and sound! It has totally blown away all my hopes and expectations. I have to agree that the pics don't even do it justice. From the second I opened the case I've been amazed. The workmanship and attention to detail is phenominal in all regards. Best of all, I truly bonded with this instrument the moment I played the first notes, a connection I've never felt with a guitar before. That is the final icing on the cake! I'm so happy right now I can't describe it. To everyone in the queue, believe me it will be a great experience when your build is done; Jason is The Man folks! It's getting late here, I'll post pics and a full review later. Thanks to everyone for all the congrats and compliments. Jason I don't know how to thank you for such a great experience, you are a true craftsman in every sense. I'll call you tomorrow morning to thank you "in person". Here's a shot right after I opened the case.

Oh man John. I have been on pins and needles all night!!! I am so relieved. Thanks so much!!! I would love to talk to you tomorrow morning! The local paper is interviewing me to do an article in the Business section on Schroeder Guitars!!!! But that is at 10am my time. Any time before or after that would be great!
You have been an amazing support. Your emails of encouragement through all of this journey have been a HUGE help. Thank you my friend! I hope you enjoy the guitar for years. I hope to hear more in terms of a tone report after you can "open it up a bit" this weekend!
Talk soon John.

Congrats on the safe arrival of a stunning guitar! I've enjoyed watching this beauty come together.
It looks like the Schroeder gravitational pull is getting pretty strong here on the east side :D

Well I'm totally loving my second weekend with my new guitar. I still can't say enough about how awesome this is. I'm going to post a full report soon but in the meantime, more photos can never hurt. I'm not the greatest with the camera but some of these came out nice enough to show some detail. Enjoy!

Hi all- Just watching the vids of Jason "demo"ing your guitar john-- what did you use for your neck pickup? Whatever it is, it is AWESOME clean.

It sure was a Duncan Alnico II. I really loved the sound of this guitar in the neck position. Had a clarity of a Strat but much more beefy and fat. Like Stevie Ray without the 13s!!!
Just see that I missed your call Bill. I am by my phone now if you wanted to give me a ring.

Thanks Bill! Yeah, those videos were a great touch. I noticed you were recently asking about old progress thread pics that have gone away so I figured I'd resurrect some oldies of mine. Oh, the memories...
