Body cutout... simply a gorgeous piece of Honduran mahogany.

And the snakewood board... This piece is about 7 inches wide so teh fingerboard will be taken from the highly figured side.

Jason, that is one piece of wood? Carzy how one side is so dramatically figured. Mother nature is bizzare.
Schroeder

No kidding! The line distinguishing the figured from non-figured snakewood is where heartwood meets sapwood (analogous to the line you see in limba). The snakewood figure is typically found in the heartwood or center core of the tree.

A 7" wide fretboard huh?....that's almost wide enough for one of my necks ;) :D

Hey Rob!
I do have a couple of updates. Your frets are in and we are waiting for what electronics configuration you wanted. Did you get the message we called? I think Elizabeth talked to your wife. Give me a shout when you get a chance! Not much left to do on your guitar except finish work!

These pics were taken at the Sundial Bridge in Redding. The "Black Mamba" was stopping traffic!! Lot of positive comments as people walked by. I have to say there is something really classy and understated about this guitar. Really pleased with how it turned out. You may notice a lighter colored streak of wood on the backplate and another shiny black inlay. That is a Raven in black onyx, sitting on a snakewood branch. Closeup of the inlay to follow...
The electronics ended up with this configuration:
- Master Volume
- 5-way rotary that gives the following
Position 1) full bridge humbucker
Position 2) split bridge
Position 3) Full bridge/full neck humbuckers (like LP middle position)
Position 4) split neck
Position 5) Full neck humbucker
- Mini-toggle turns on the middle pickup on/off for stratty tones

I am absolutely blown away...
When I came up with the idea for this guitar I was intentionally going for the "understated and classy" look. While the rough idea for the guitar is mine, the polishing and subtle touches are all Jason. For that, I will be eternally grateful. Some of the things on this guitar are a complete (and welcome) surprise to me. The headstock, and truss cover are an example of this. The inlay on the back plate is simply bewildering. I had no idea this was being done and I am stunned that a builder would take his valuable time and amazing skills to do something like this for a client. To say that it is above and beyond would do it a disservice, I have no words for this.
I am not a man of great means. I am a teacher and my wife does not work. I have to scrape and scrounge every penny I make to buy guitars of this magnitude. I say this not to illicit pity, but merely to put something like this into perspective. Teaching is a labor of love. I have the education and skill set to be making a lot more money, but I love what I do. So when I see someone like Jason doing things on my instrument that he is under zero obligation to do, it tells me that what he is doing is also a labor of love. For that I have the highest respect and admiration. He cared about this guitar and that is why it turned out to be a special instrument.
Kudos to Jason and Elizabeth for having the patience and vision to see this to fruition.

WOW. "The Raven" is pure art. Enjoy it!
That shot of the headstock and neck is unreal. How does snakewood compare with the traditional fingerboard woods?

This was another success story with a bit of direction and a lot of freedom to make something killer. I have to thank Rob for that.
Snakewood is tonally very similar to ebony . Very hard and dense so it yields a snappy attack. Really gorgeous material up close and smells amazing when you work with it.
