O.K. here is a quick update of my guitar:
Change specs to a one piece white limba back and a one-piece maple top. Top started off looking like this:
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/Wood/one%20piece%20quilt.jpg
Given the guitar was spec'd out to be a Semi-Hollow with an S-Hole Jason needed to work the chambered area prior to gluing the top to he Limba...

Believe me Shad...Jason deserves all the credit in the world. The fact that he's doing this kind of work by hand is amazing to me. It's one thing to make a flat sound chamber, but to work it out by hand and make the "S" hole is pure craftmanship.
Since the pictures Jason has been working on smoothing out the chamber and giving it a coat of oil before gluing it together. He has also been working on making he quilted headstock venier and some other small detials.

And a fingerboard shot... This fingerboard is gorgeous. There are very fine flames in the Brazilian RW!! You can see them if you look closely running perpendicular to the grain (parallel to the fret slots). Those are not saw marks. They will be more pronounced after final sanding. The board will also darken a bit. This board is completely naked in this photo with no oil, etc. to darken the grain. The board is also oversized and is not tapered yet.

Honestly I think picking an inlay is the hardest part of the whole process...this goes for both custom builds that I've gone through. The Koi are just exceptional and I really can't believe that Ath does it all by hand...just AMAZING!!
J and Ath also came up with a killer idea for a play on J's S-Inlay for the headstock...really ties in the the Koi (pictures to come).

I'm so glad you like it! I know picking an inlay can be tricky so I'm trying to come up with some things to help. Comcast's plagued migration has slowed this down a lot, though I must be thankful for the gig of space I'll have for each sub-account. I'll be able to upload tons of potential inlay design ideas. :)
If anyone is even vaguely pondering an inlay, please feel free to contact me. I always enjoy talking about anything to do with inlay. I've got tons of design books, tons of photos and always enjoy researching something new.

OK, here goes!! Chris' guitar has been an epic journey. We have been through several top choices and now are on the final selection!! The title of the this thread may need to be modified a bit by now!
Long story short...
The boatwake quilt was changed to a one piece flamey-quilt top after much agonizing by Chris. Always a tough choice to decide on the top. So we were well on our way to finishing the body and had a slight mixup with pickup specs when it came down to the routing. Bottom line, the pickup cavities that he expected were not what we routed! The details of the mixup are irrelevant but suffice it to say that it exposed some weaknesses in our procedures for documenting spec changes and updating the shop work orders.
Chris and I debated on the most appropriate path forward and agreed that the best solution would be to go back and pick a new top and start again.
SO, Chris' original boatwake is an upcoming RTS:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3083/2480064334_4a51632802_o.jpg
The one-piece flamey quilt became the Ultrafaded semi-hollow singlecut RTS:
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/RTS/SC_SemiHollow/semi_complete2.jpg
And this is the REAL Chris G Custom!!!!!! I think that sometimes you go through a lot to find what you really wanted in the first place...
Here is Chris guitar: Semi-hollow quilt top, white limba back.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3135/2480049946_1694df802b_o.jpg
Here I am refining the S-hole with a very high tech piece of equipment!! A dill bit with sandpaper wrapped around it in the drill press!! Works great!
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2032/2479235011_f27e86da3e_o.jpg
So we are back on track and moving forward!! Many more pics to come.

I would like to say that I probably drove J nuts with all of the e-mails that I sent him over the course of the build process. It was a tough choice to drop the boat-wake and go to the one-piece. The mix-up was tough, but in the end J treated me great and did what any honest person would do and worked through the options with me. The top that I ended up with is FREAKIN' AMAZING and in the end it will make a killer guitar that I'm sure I'll be estatic to play. Sometimes things happen...
...in the end there was no harm done, there will be two incredible RTS guitars coming out, I'll get an amazing guitar and all will be good.
Thanks for everything J...this is just one of the benefits of going through a small builder.
Now get back to work and finish that bad boy up!!! ;)

Here is a shot of Chris' neck with finish on it. Very dramatic! The plan is to have the back of the neck satin and the rest of the guitar gloss. A somewhat complex procedure, but gives a very cool feel of the neck.

Here are a couple of pics of Chris' guitar before I buff the body and headstock. The neck is satin so I masked off the body and headstock so I could spray the satin and now I will mask the neck so I can wetsand and buff the body and headstock without making the satin neck shiny.
This pic gives you a shot of the overall blend of stains and color details on the guitar. Note the thin black purfling between the flamed maple binding and the limba body. Also the gray/black sanded back satin neck and sunburst glossy body and headstock.

So, I walked into the shop yesterday and your guitar was the first thing we saw sitting in the final assembly bench and my jaw just dropped. Seeing this guitar in person was that much better than seeing it on the web. Duh! J gave us a tone preview and it sounded nice, I understand there were still some wiring and pickup tweaks to be done. It will surely be a monster! I was drawn instantly to those cool knobs, great touch from J. The ideas that pour forth from his brain are amazing. There were lots of cool things in the shop that I dont think have shown up on the forum yet. I'll post a full shop visit thread and pics when I get back to Anchorage next Tues. Cheers, Skip

Details like the control knobs, binding, S-hole, and inlay just knock this thing out of the park. Congratulation on an incredible build.

Good things come to those who wait... ;)
I honestly haven't spent enough time with guitar to give a tone report, but from a feel / look standpoint the guitar is a pure work of art. Dave is totally right about the pictures not doing the guitar justice. You really don't get to take in all of the subtle details on the guitar until you hold it. The binding, inlay, back, knobs, finish...everything is just killer. I really can't say enough about the look and feel of the guitar. The neck is way better than I ever hoped for...
...honestly I could go on and on about the looks / feel of the guitar, it's a work of true art!!!

Funny how that works...I'm the same way with other folks that talk about their Schroeder, Thorn, etc. guitar coming in.
I'm going to spend some more time with it over the weekend before I try to get a tone report out. I will also try to get some pictures taken of it with my other guitars, etc. within the next week or so. Will be interesting to get a picture of it together with it's RTS brotheran and the Gretz BRW SC (I had this guitar made to be it's counter part). Stay tuned....

Well I got to spend some quality time with Schroeder #21 over this past weekend. From a feel standpoint it was everything that I wanted and more. For those that don’t remember I wanted this guitar to be a companion guitar to another custom build that I had done in the past. The main differences in the two guitars are:
-Necks: BRW versus Maple
-Body wood: Mahogany versus Limba
-S/H Configuration: internal chambering versus s-hole
-Electronics: P-90 neck/HB bridge & 3-way combo versus H-S-H & 5-way
I had even sent J out my other guitar to copy the neck and he actually improved on the feel of the neck based on what he got off of the other guitar. It fits my hand like a glove and man the feel of a satin finished maple neck…OH MY!! The guitar balances very well sitting down or standing up which I was very happy to see. Overall I was looking for a guitar with a little more bite than my other custom and something that could get me into Strat territory when needed (position #4). I got all of that and then some! This is my second time around the Bryan Gunsher p’ups and I again am not disappointed. The TigerBurst RTS that I purchased from J previously had Bryan’s BG Buckers installed and while I liked the more vintage tone I wanted something with a bit more oomph. This time around we went with Bryan’s Smoke Stacks with a S-90 in the middle and MAN what a combo! These p’ups are very articulate and with the switching we went with (there is also a mini-toggle to turn the middle pup on and off) I can get the following combo’s:
Position 1: Full Bridge Humbucker
Position 2: Split Bridge (slug coil on)
Position 3: Full Bridge and full neck in parallel (just like middle position of a Les Paul)
Position 4: Split Neck (slug on)
Position 5: Full Neck Humbucker
With the mini-toggle in the on position:
Position 1: Full Bridge Humbucker/Middle PUP on (Sounds like a strat in position 2 on roids!)
Position 2: Split Bridge/Middle PUP (like a Strat's standard 2 position)
Position 3: ALL PUPs on
Position 4: Split Neck/Middle PUP (like a Strat's standard 4 position)
Position 5: Full Neck Humbucker/Middle PUP on (Sounds like a strat in position 4 on roids!)
I’m not sure that I will find a use for all of these combinations, but the position 4 is killer and gives me the quack that I was looking for…pretty close to a Strat tone, but with a bit more meet to eat…a.k.a. “on roids”!
Man this guitar just sings!!! The note attack that the maple neck adds is just great and I really do feel that the wood choice, extra body mass and S/H addition really resulted in the ultimate Strat…sorry purists I know that nothing beats a Strat, but I never really bonded with the tone of them for one reason or another but always wanted to get into that territory.
Overall I’m not sure that I could be happier with this guitar. I will admit that it will take some time to get used to a 5-way again (haven’t had one in 20 years) but I’m sure that won’t take very long. Thanks J, E, Ath and gang for making this guitar for me, replying to the countless e-mails and generally making this build a great experience. Now I just need to find the money to get a second custom order in…
…oh and I promise that I will get some pictures of my own taken at some point!
