View Full Version : Turlough One-Piece Quilt!

Turlough just approved his one-piece quilt. Interestingly, it will be the twin of Ryan and Dave Merkley's one-piece quilt!! Note the "figure-print" as they are remarkably similar. They are by my best account bookmatched pieces from the same tree.

You don't see many one-piece quilts with that much character. That baby is going to pop when finished.

I know, I'm sooo pleased. When ordering I'd said I'd ideally like a one piece tube quilt top, having only seen 2 others that I'd liked previously I didn't really expect there to be one out there that fitted the bill.
Shock when an email arrives from Jason with the PERFECT type of top. I really couldn't believe it so I have to say, great work J.
Being cheeky but I definitely have to say I'm going to be stealing/borrowing a few ideas from yours vangit. It really blew me away when I first saw it.
All the best

Here is Turlough's fingerboard. Believe it or not, this is Brazilian. I looks darker than a lot of EBONY that I have!! The fingerboard is made from the same piece as the neck so the whole neck will be nearly black. Really a beautiful and rare piece of wood. The purfling is snakewood and there is also a thin piece of snakewood under the Brazilian binding. It will reveal itself when I carve the neck. I really love the organic look of this neck and i think it is a really classy touch. Nice choice Turlough!!

And a closeup. You can see I have a lot of sanding left to do!! This is sanded to 100 grit on the radius block...

This is shaping up to be another beautiful guitar. One piece tops are soooo nice. Especially when they have even coverage of figuring. And to me that is the best looking limba back I`ve seen so far. I like it even more that the flamed limba pieces. And the snakewood purfling on the fretboard is a great detail touch. Lots of goodness going on with this project.

Here are a couple of photos of the staining process. First is a photo of the iped stain (actually it is a triple stain with some sanding in between):
http://www.schroederguitars.com/photos/Turlough/turlough%20stain.jpg
And here it is with the sunburst applied. It looks a bit dark in this photo because it has vinyl sealer over the top of the burst. Vinyl seal takes up a lot more light than lacquer. It will looks a bit lighter no that some lacquer has been sprayed. More pics to come...

Just a quick note to let you know your guitar will be completed this week. I completed the wiring Friday and am working on all the final wood pieces today. Backplates, knobs, truss rod cover, etc.
Pics, videos and tracking number to come...

Well, always a good day when you can play test a nearly completed guitar! Here is Turlough's guitar 99% complete. I just have to do the tiniest detail work on attaching the plates and installing the strap locks and it is ready to go to Ireland. I will also be drilling holes in the tremelo spring plate.
The Bareknuckles sound fantastic in this guitar. FAT tone. Just had that really aggressive AC/DC grit and growl. It also sounded amazing doing Santana type solos. Loved the ballsy tone of the pickups with this combo of woods. The fatback black limba body and chubby Brazilian neck make for all kinds of good tone!

You can see the snakewood purfling on the fretboard edges and underneath the binding in this shot. The fingerboard purfling is very subtle but very classy. Also note that there are no fret ends exposed.

Beautiful pics T! I can't tell you how relieved I am when someone is happy with their guitar. I always want to add one more cool thing or make one more thing a little better or there is a file mark on a fret end that was missed. But you can chase these things forever on a handmade guitar. That is why guitars take a while to send out after they are done (plus I like to get to know them and find out what works well so I can use it on another guitar)!! Anyway, so glad you are enjoying it.
You know, we (me, Mitchell and James Russell) talked a LOT about what made the tone of your guitar so fat and we all agreed that the main difference was the thickness of your back. Schroeder #0004 was the same way. About a 1-5/8" thick back really makes a difference. But you also end up with a heavier instrument. I should have weighed Turlough's guitar but it was definitely on the heavy side. Nothing a wide strap won't fix!
And yes, the Tigerburst's sister is about to make the trans-Atlantic journey!!

Well I've been living with my custom for a while now and it just makes all my other guitars seem like a piece of cr@p, playability, tone, feel, it's just in a different league! I have to be honest, we've had an especially wet summer in Belfast with humidity averaging over 90% so the 14th fret lifted a little, not an issue, just an indication of how wet our summer was. The action on my avalon premier series acoustic raised by well over 1mm at the 9th fret and even my les paul went out of tune, it was freaky!
A simple dress would have been more than adequate but I decided to go the whole hog and got a PLEK job and I have to say the results are stunning. An already perfect guitar became magical, I fitted a push-pull volume pot for coil taps and daily every other guitar is becoming more and more1
So I must say a big thank you to J, Eliz and Co. For the most perfect guitar I’ve ever owned!
Cheers guys! It's a blues monster!
